Bandcamp download not visible in Naim app
Posted by: Richard Morris on 25 January 2017
I've downloaded lots of Bandcamp music (all in FLAC), put it in the US Downloads folder and played it via the Naim app into a Mu-so. All downloads are run through Metadatics first.
However this download does not show up in the app. The tracks will play in other apps - like VLC - on a MacBook.
Any ideas appreciated.
I do not know the UnitiServe. Does it offer a way to reindex the music collection?
Did you try to clean the upnp cache in the app? (Can be found in the upnp input settings AFAIR.)
Are the files correctly meta tagged?
Clear the Naim app's UPnP cache ( <Inputs...> / <UPnP> / <Clear Cache> ).
Check the metadata: The Naim app can be sensitive to odd characters (e.g. symbols, some punctuation and accented characters).
Can you see it in N-Serve? If not try going to Maintenance in N-Serve, Network Shares, Downloads, and rescan. That usually works for me.
if that fails then delete the whole thing from the Unitiserve downloads folder and try again.
I'm assuming in this that all looks ok on Metadatics.
I'm guessing a tagging issue or an issue in the name of the folder or one or more of the files -- both can throw off the uServe to where it won't index some or all of an album.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I've tried them all and none works.
Everything looks fine in Metadatics.
I've seen the following message a few times:
Error: SqlException - DELETE statement conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCE constraint 'FKC_Key0222_Key02'. The conflict occurred in database 'VaderPC', table 'AMG_Genre22', column 'Key0222'.
The statement has been terminated. occurred while scanning share \\NSSRVAF44\Downloads (156)
Does anyone know what it means?
Yes I know what it means, but that doesn't mean that I know how to fix it using the UI!
I suggest that you try changing the Genre tag for this particular album and try again (change it to one of the common Genres).
Richard, my advice is to re-encode the files using dBpoweramp or similar. You wont loose data - but you should have a FLAC variant that Naim recognises. There are are several sub variant to FLAC files - and it might be your ones are just not compatible with Naim
I have a small number of Bandcamp FLAC albums on my Unitiserve, and they show up fine. I didn't feel the need to change any metadata, so they just went straight into the downloads folder unchanged. Maybe the US doesn't like something you've done in Metadatics - easily tested by downloading one again?
I notice that all the Bandcamp stuff I have has a genre (Unassigned) which, despite the brackets, doesn't cause any issues - other than having created a useless genre.
Thanks again. I re-downloaded in AIFF, didn't run the folder through Metadatics - so genre is 'unassigned', and it plays.
The artist is Casey Golden and its a free download if anyone else wants to try. Solo jazz piano.
All my other (20 or so) Bandcamp downloads are FLAC with the genre changed in Metadatics - usually to Jazz - and they play fine.
Just downloaded it now in FLAC and it works fine here.
Did you change the genre?
No, I didn't change anything.
If it's on Bandcamp as both aiff and flac, the tagging and file names COULD be different in the two versions. As noted, the UServe can be quite picky. I was flustered for a week over an album that would not index; there was an invisible character embedded in the album's folder name. When I had such issues wiht the UServe, I would rename the folder and ALL the files and re-do the tagging. Nothing that I'd done that to ever refused to be indexed.
Bart, Bandcamp only has FLAC or MP3. I assume Richard converted to AIFF himself.

Richard, have you re encoded as I suggested?

No need, Bandcamp does offer downloads in AIFF (and many other formats).
[I'd previously tried a re-encode FLAC to FLAC using XLD which didn't work.]
I've got another problematic d/l - I'll does a complete edit as Bart suggests.
Ok thanks, so it appears you have re-encoded a FLAC and still doesn't work....

Correct, so I deleted the file and re-downloaded in AIFF. For completeness I should re-download again and then change the Genre to see what happens.
As I said previously there was something in the Genre tag you had that the system (SQLExpress I believe) doesn't like*. Converting the data format may or may not alter the contents of the metadata tags depending on the tool used.
* It encountered a referential integrity violation when trying to remove some old genre tag data for that download (presumably it was trying to recreate the genre tag to fix a problem): As a result it'll roll back the entire transaction and the indexing will fail.
