Flatcap xs - loose connectors

Posted by: Kacper on 30 January 2017

hi guys,

I have purchased 2nd hand flatcap xs and I found that connectors in the back are very loose - it feels like something has broken. Is this normal ?

Kacper,

some movement of the sockets is normal - they are PCB mounted and the PCB is on compliant "sprung" mounts to minimise microphonic effects.

They are meant to be loose. My Dealer told me that once they had to send one back to get it 'loosened' as it did not sound right - returned loose unit sounded good again.

Let it all hang-loose - Rejoice!

Hi Richard,

thanks for your explanation! Technically flatcap works fine. I was only wondering if those kind of  movement of the sockets/connectors  is normal.

My first impression was - it's something wrong with that

I've told my wife so

Note also that there have been multiple posts on whether or not to lock collars and let SNAICs hang completely freeloose..   :ghee:

When I bought my Supernait, the Naim dealer told me stricktly to solder the naim plugs on the speaker cable, not to lock the collars and insert the bananaplugs at speakerside one at the bass plug for black and one at the treble plug for red.

The only difference I noticed was the speakerplugs. It made an audible change to my ears.

Its OK & debatable about leaving IC (signal) lock rings loose to gain SQ,  & also note that HiLine & SL connectors don't have lock rings anyway.  But please don't leave SNAIC lock rings loose,  SNAIC carry power & a loose/bad/lost connection might cause component damage.
