Tweak this?

Looking for some advice tweaking my naim set-up please?

After the help and advice I got initially setting it up I thought I might risk another question, My old man was a hifi/music fanatic, I grew up listening from everything from Sony to Krell,Magnepan and Quad, he bought hifi stuff compulsively and he was disabled so always ended up going with him to shows and demo's and buying trips as he couldn't carry the boxes back to the car, anyways, after he croaked I kept one of his systems, an Audiolab mono block set up and some Harbeth speakers, I blew one of the amps up and ended up with a £30 Cyrus 2 Oxfam special and have used that for 10 years and still do now in my office, The old duffer also left me an old but mint Michell turntable along with his entire collection of advantgarde Jazz LP's which I shoved in the loft till recently, Strangely he NEVER owned anything by NAIM, and I always loved the Olive green colour on the from of the older one's, so in his memory and to play some of his wacky records I've put together this little NAIM set-up,

NAIM NAC62 with MC boards (serviced)

NAIM NAP140 (serviced)

NAIM CD3.5

NAIM SNAIC 4 and 5 pin cables (Grey)

Cable Talk 3.2 speaker (4m each side)

Michell Transcriptor turntable - Mission Mechanic arm - Dynavector cartridge

PMC DB1 speakers on Acoustic Energy stands

Room is 4mx4m

I've dressed the cables properly and followed NAIM's placement instructions and it sounds gorgeous, it's without a doubt one of the most detailed and alive sounding systems I've ever heard,it sparkles,

My question now is, can it get better than this? could anyone give me further advice on how to get the best out of it please?

Thanks in advance for any help proffered,

That sounds like a cracking system - You could -

Change the Snaic4 to the later Black one (between 62 / 140)

Add a Hi-Cap to the 62 (and add another Black Snaic 5)

Add a Flatcap (or another Hi-Cap) to the CD3.5.

Other than that i'd be tempted to leave it alone and just enjoy it

What a great system to start out with. The usual reccomendation here will be to get yourself some Naim Naca5 speaker wire. It should make a big difference and is unbeatable for the price. Maybe if you intend on sticking with the Cd3.5 then go for a flat cap power supply for it. A worthwhile upgrade and can be bought quite cheaply second hand now, especially in the olive colour.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the replies,

Will the NAC A5 make that much of a difference?

Same with the HI-CAP?  what can I expect in improvements please?

I'm very tempted by the FLAT-CAP but the size difference is ruling it out at this point as I'm an interior design facist!

Thanks again for peoples time and responses,

Is the wire between the 62 and 140 black? If so it's a black snaic and absolutely fine. The wire between the 3.5 and 62 should be thin, grey, and floppy. This is the standard interconnect and is fine too. You should get the A5 cables though, as the 140 is designed to work with them. It should give a more solid and energetic sound. This is what I'd do first, then just enjoy it for a few months. Maybe then you can think about a Hicap for the 62. There's no rush.

Maybe borrow a set of naca5 from your dealer if you can, it's a bit dearer than the stuff you've got which may well be OK but give the Naim cable a listen and decide. What have you got the system sitting on? There might be room for tweaking here, avoid lots of steel. The Caps are a good move if box count doesn't.

I've just checked and the wire between the 62 and 140 is indeed black, and the one between the 3.5 and 62 is the one you describe, so will these be ok?  is there any point in spending £200/£300 on some fancy cables?

Both the amps and the cd are situated on a heavy mdf white bench type affair with only one shelf, I'd initially planned in my head a NAIT 2 sat on its own with the pretty turntable beside it (2ft away) and an oddball cd player (Musical Fidelity X-RAY) on the shelf below purely for aesthetic/minimalist reasons but for some reason that is beyond my knowledge the 62-140 pair was a fair bit cheaper!  does anyone know why this is? is the NAIT that good?

So I've ordered the NAC A5 cable (4m pair) and will take the advice and enjoy it for a while, I ordered the A5 jumper cable for the speakers too, will these jumpers make any difference at all?

To be completely honest I'm completely happy with the way it sounds as it is, in all my years I've never heard anything quite like it, I thought all that PRAT stuff was just hype but now I'm not so sure, I'm hearing things in my CD collection that I've never heard before, I guess part of me is just curious to hear it can sound any better,

Many thanks as ever for all the advice and patience with my questions,

You certainly don't need fancy cables: a Naim snail costs about £150 I think. Well done for getting the cables. Slightly better than jumpers is two sets of plugs at the speaker end, but the jumpers will be fine. It will take about a month for the speaker wires to run in, so don't be surprised if they sound a bit thin to start with, they will come good and sound great. It's a lovely system, and you seem really happy with it. Enjoy your dad's jazz!

Crikey, that must be the snazzy fast one.

I have to say, under the influence of alcohol, that 150 quid is a fancy cable by any stretch of imagination.  My wife, and my friends, think I'm obsessed with cables and mine are very modest compared to most on here, and that's without them knowing how much power lines cost.  When you are sending hundreds of pounds on cables to most people that's both fancy and mad

Olive Hi-cap, budget for a service if not carried out recently.

Buy more vinyl and a nice Malbec or bottle of Malt....

What a lovely system.  I use a NAP140 and PMC DB1i speakers too.  They make a lovely pairing.  The brother in law has a 72/hicap/140 with PMC TB1i speakers and that sounds wonderful too.

Given that you have the right cables for a system that is already singing, the one hardware upgrade that you might consider is the one that others have mentioned already, namely the use of a serviced hicap to power the 62.  Alternatively, you could invest the money in more vinyl records and a glass or two of red wine/ your favourite tipple.

Best regards, FT

Hi,

Lovely system.  Speaker cable change and then leave well alone.

Thanks!

So the A5 cables arrived in the post this AM and I swapped them over before setting off to work, just spent the evening listening through them, I was dubious that they'd be any different to the Talk-3's, how wrong could I be? it's like a veil has been lifted from the music, everything sounds better, tighter  and more controlled, more dynamic and sparkly, I'll do the Hi-Cap and black SNAIC thing in time, and I'm sure I'll be back to ask some more daft questions, I am indeed going to just leave it as it is for a good while because it looks so pretty and now sounds utterly beautiful too,

I'm really pleased so thanks for all the advice!
