No longer a wonky active system
Posted by: Marksnaim on 04 February 2017
I've just borrowed a 250DR from my dealer to see if it's worth swapping out the 250.2 doing service on the bass drivers of my Isobariks. It's basically new so will need some run in time but looks like the 250.2 won't be going back in the rack based on early impressions. ![]()
Well done!
I'm not surprised - when I ran Active Isobariks (for 25 years) I found most impact was on the Bass driver - much cleaner with better timing and definition with better Power Amp used.
I ran 3x 300 and tried a single Nap500 and it had best impact when driving the bass, but I never got wonky-active to sound right, so stuck with 3x300 until I could afford 3x500 - which the Briks loved. But at that point the speakers were finally the upgrade point, so they are a great speaker.
Enjoy!
DB.
Congratulations, nice move!
Back in the day, I was Full Blown Aktiv with Linn, but now passive Tri-Amped Briks.

That's an impressive system you have in the making, have you hit the Lottery!

3 sources, can be a lot to bite off, but have you considered the digital CD?
Enjoy your Music, The Why.

Thanks Allante,
I might add an HDX do I can rip/listen to the few CDs we have at some point but I enjoy the vinyl enough to not hanker after more media options. There's only so much time per day I can listen unfortunately.
system is sounding a bit bass heavy today. Going to give it a week for the new 250DR to fully warm up and if the balance doesn't come back a bit I might venture to increase the treble gain a bit on the Snaxo.
best regards

If you are feeling like investing a bit more the best value for money upgrade to my active system I have ever made was a Super Lumina SNAIC connecting to the SNAXO. Really, really impressive. Others have said the same.
See if you can borrow one.
I also think fiddling with SNAXO settings needs to be done very, very carefully. Easy to make a hash of I believe.

Hi Bruce,
Interesting thought. I don't think my dealer is holding SL in stock but I could ask. I think I've heard the virtues of that upgrade extolled before. I do need to hold back funds though. It's all crying out for a bit more rack space at the moment. Hoping to get it onto Fraim later this year. Having said that, just had a fiddle (dressing) with the snakes orgy behind the cabinet and unless it's all in my head it sounds a lot more open tonight. More to come I suspect though.
Re the adjustments, yes aware of how sensitive they can be. That's why I've left well alone this far. Not touching anything until at least the weekend.

Update; sounding much better today. It had all sort of receded or gone a bit muffled. I'd not experienced much in the way of burn in woes with my other two 250DRs but this one, or maybe the Superline to 282 cable (or both, who knows) seem to be giving me more of a rough ride. However the sound is now detaching itself from the speakers again which is a relief. The bass is excellent and seems to go deeper than the 250.2 whilst at the same time being more controlled. It's been said before that active systems can be a pain in the A*** when it comes to set up. I've not really held to that view in the past but I'm coming round to it now. My current installation is very much plug and play, all crammed into and on top of a single cabinet. I get the feeling that there is something quite special straining to get out now as it's beginning to show what it can do. So keen to get the new room sorted so it can get properly installed on Fraim and show it's true potential.
