Supernait DAC Digital Inputs

Posted by: Ardo on 08 February 2017

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my TV or iPod in the digital Inputs with Toslink or Coaxial on aux1, but it doesn't work. Connecting the iPod on the front panel works, but I don't know, if the signal is digital or analog.

I reset it, but nothing changed (Reset: prog + disp)

I'm new in the Naim world, maybe I have to program the digital inputs or something else? I tried it, but nothing happened.

I always appreciate any suggestions, thx Eduardo

Hi ardo. You need to assign the digital inputs. You'll find how to in the manual

Hi Finkfan,

ok, I'll try again, thanks

Hi, the SN front panel input has auto-assigning function and if you connect iphone to it, you use it as another analogue input. To use front panel input as digital input, you have to use coaxial S/PDIF cable with one end terminated to 3.5 mm plug or optical cable, with one end terminated to mini-toslink. I hope this helps.

Hi Andrius, thanks, that's what I thought. But finally I found the problem. The amp doesn't work with my TV (Samsung UE40c7700), because it doesn't support Dolby, even if I change the sound in the TV from Dolby to MPG the amp will not connect it.

Funkfan are right, you have to program the channels first. With my CD Recorder on Toslink it works perfect.

Can't you set the TV to 2 channel PCM? I'm not aware of any TV where this is not possible.

[@mention:55771800629066628] beat me to it. You should be able to switch the SPDIF out to PCM which will work with the supernait dac

If you get it to work, its brilliant. The SN can push out endless levels of dynamics which is absolutely great when watching movies. The SN dac is ok, not worldclass but it suits the AV purpose very well. I use it almost every day and it transforms your experience. I've never tried and TV to SN connection using analogue so I can't compare that.

Somewhere in TV menu should be setting to make output signal LPCM. Not sure if SN can handle 24/192 on optical though. SN dac maybe not as revealing and smooth as V1, but it really kicks.

Yes, set your TV output to PCM stereo, assign the right input on  your SN and it should work.

I previously had a TV that wouldn't convert some sources, however. I used an analogue work-around for those, but the new TV converts everything just fine. The benefit of routing all AV audio through the TV is that it generally eliminates synch issues.

Oh great, thanks a lot for all your suggestions, I'll try. Yes, I think I can change it to PCM, this will be the solution! Yesterday I connect the TV in an analog way (3,5 mm to Chinch) and the sound was not so bad, but not really nice, with the DAC I'm sure it will be much better. I hear most of the time vinyl and the sound with the Stageline on the KEF's LS50 is really amazing, I couldn't imagine that this amp could improve the sound in such a quality. I'm very happy with the Supernait

No, it doesn't work. I changed the TV to mpg and to PCM, but nothing happened, it's really strange.

Enjoy your SN. It has "balls" for sure Even though V1 became my main DAC, i still use SN DAC quite offten.  It has some more punch and kick and on some rock tracks i prefer it. Also, if I try to play some Rocksmith on PC and use V1 as DAC, it gets buffering problems and music starts to break. SN DAC has zero of such problems. I know NAIM  has implemented some feature in the new firmware of V1 to fix unstable source problem, but I not tried  it yet. By the way, i tried today optical cable to SN and 192kHz file was only noise. 96 kHz played back fine.

Hi Winky, is it a difference between the right and left digital input? What do you mean with left or right, right is closer to the power button - no. 2 on the manual?

If it works with your CD player Ardo then it's an issue with the Tv. I wonder if your Tv is like some machines I've seen that need to be told to send audio out via Digital out rather than HDMI?

I had my old TV connected to my Supernait via optical,  it worked OK,  it took a little bit of fiddling, maybe I didn't get the SN input & button assignment right first time,  but it was easy enough.  The SN input needs configuring as per the manual & the TV menu needed to be set to whatever is basic 2 ch,  in my case it was PCM but that will vary with different brands,  & don't use Dolby if you have that as an option.   Its just a question of persevering.

Sorry but I can't go look at my settings & write that up for you as I now have the TV routed via the NDX  & it's a different TV.

Thinking about it that wouldn't be right. The Tv won't send audio out via hdmi

Posted on: 09 February 2017 by Adam Zielinski

Modern TVs have a so-called 'arc return' via HDMI - so both video and audio can be sent from a TV to a processor / amp.

Ah, right

I've tried my Panasonic Tv and that works perfectly into my SN. There are no settings in the menu so I can only assume it's outputting PCM. I've just checked my Samsung tv and the only option I have for them SPDIF is pcm audio. It's too far away from my SN to try though

At least on my Panasonic you only see "S/PDIF output" in audio settings when TV actually starts to play something, for example music or movie from usb. Interestingly, it outputs through optical even HDMI source is used, so TV act as HDMI -> S/PDIF converter.

Yes, it works with the cd player, it's definitely a problem with the Samsung TV. I'm still looking for more details in the menu, but I can't find any.

The TV was working before with a HDMI cable and the Yamaha 7.1 receiver. Honestly, the sound was horrible, never again a surround amp. The analogue connection with the Supernait it's much more better

Hi Mike,

Hi Mike,

thanks for the advice, we already tried your suggestions, but no chance.

Hi Finkfan,

yes indeed, on my Samsung TV I can't find any other options between Dolby - MPG and SPDIF - PCM. Maybe the SN can't read my Samsung mpg connection (PCM).

Thats all I can find in the Tv manual
