Cartridge advice!
Posted by: jarvicseven on 14 February 2017
Firstly, sorry for my noob questions,
Could anyone recommend a Moving Coil cartridge for a REGA p2/RB220 arm That would Suit my NAC62/NAP140 amplifier please?
My budget is around £200/£300 and I have zero previous cartridge experience,
Thanks as always for any help and advice proffered,
why not a moving magnet with P2? MM gives you more drive and power than mc.
Hi,
are you looking for an MC cartridge because your 62 has K or S board fitted? If this is the case, Dynavectors, like the 10x5, are a popular choice. As the rega arm has a fixed height , ZYX is another good choice. Their cartridges have the right dimensions for rega arms, but the R50 is very likely over the top for a P2.
That's it exactly, I'm struggling to find the MM boards for the NAC,
I've been using the REGA a2d Phono stage with an MM Carbon Cartridge, which is ok because It's so small I can hide it way, The hifi shop told me that I'd get better sound quality with the matching FONO stage and an Elys cartridge but that won't work for me as the FONO is hideous and too bulky to hide,
So I thought I'd ask about using the MC stage in the naim,
The Dynavector looks fab but it's double my budget,
Would a Denon DL103 work on with the naim amp?
Thanks for all your help and advice,
The DL-103 punches well above its weight. I had one on a P3 RB301 with exceedingly pleasant and warm results.
On your P2 I'd stick with a MM cartridge. The Carbon is a decent cart for very little money. Forget about an MC cart for now. If you wish to spend more then better to save up for a deck upgrade.
My son is using a DL-103 on a P3 into a 42.5/hicap/140 driving Mission 700s. Works rather well.
Willy.
Rega list two complementary products on the P2's page of their site, which would take your deck that bit further.

Substantive reply.
The DL 103 weighs 8.5 grams. So what would you say? It punches a good 10 or 11 grams?
Fono is a nice pre, ugly or not, depending on taste. Best of all, Fonos are so popular, they are easy to find, used, and easy to sell or trade. Brilliant!
First Rega I ever noticed was a 2 in a record shop -- brought me back to vinyl.

Nick,
Fono is "hideous" and "too bulky". It ain't gonna happen. This despite its sonic qualities and wise advice from shop.

This.
Anyway his arm could take a better MM if not planning to move TT shortly.
I'd suggest an AT440 MLB for a very sound upgrade and trackability.
If it must be MC then AT-F7.

Of course, everyone has their own notion re appearance, and available space, but is everyone talking the same thing here? The Fono I've seen was a rather innocuous black box, so I struggle with the concept of hideous in the context of other black boxes... and I thought it was only maybe about 5 inches square by less than an inch and a half high? It had a built in usb interface so could be used for ripping LPs as well..
