Naim issues - asking for a friend

Posted by: Toon59 on 14 February 2017

A friend of mine isn't on the Forum and has some Naim issues so I said I'd post for him as the good folks on here will know how to solve his problems I am a Naim newbie myself so don't really know..... here goes......here is his situation. Please respond and I'll share with him.
TIA.

I have a Naim Unitiserve HD unit and Naim Superuniti Amp. On starting up both units they connect OK but if left switched on they lose the connection and I have to physically close down and restart the Unitiserve HD in order to restore the connection.

I also seem to have lost a number of albums that were ripped to the HD unit but had no issues identified at the time. If the unit reaches capacity, does it simply overwrite the content in the HD or just not record? I cannot tell if the unit has reached capacity but suspect this is the case.

I know that my home broadband is poor and frequently lose connection when streaming music but I am not sure if that causes the 2 Naim units to lose contact with each other.

Anyone know how to overcome the issues identified?

If you're having connection problems, it's usually down to network setup: Naim streamers are not tolerant of poorly configured networks. Maybe you can explain how your network is set up. WiFi and Ethernet over Mains are generally best avoided.

If you are having problems with web streaming (Tidal, Spotify, iRadio) you should first make sure your own network is robust. Then, if problems persist, contact your ISP and get them to check your line. I have found that ISPs vary a great deal in their willingness to investigate these problems, and it can take a great deal of persistence to get them to cooperate. Changing to a different provider can be worthwhile.

I'm not sure what happens when your Unitiserve drive fills up, but you can see how much space you are using in the Maintenance section of the N-Serve for Mac app, or the System Status section of the Display Interface.

If the HD fills up then it won't add any more rips; it doesn't over-write earlier rips.

how old is the Unitiserve/what size HD is it? If it's fairly new (in the last few years, it will be 2TB) then it should hold thousands of CD rips with no problem.

Also if the US and the Superuniti are both connected to the network, you can use the Naim IOS or Android app to control the SuperUniti and you should be able easily to find and album. Similarly n-serve for IOS is a convenient way to organise and edit your Unitiserve rips.

Apart from n-serve for IOS and, as Chris says for Mac, there is also a Windows desk top controller that you can download from Naim's website.

And if your friend is in UK then I suggest a phone call to Naim Technical Support would be a good investment. If he isn't in UK he could email them. And if he wants help from forum members, it will be best to join the forum himself because the help works best when the person doing the asking can get into a conversation in the forum with a few members.

best

And if everyelse fails Naim support can login to the servers and look for problems. Another great thing with the old platform.

If you connect both US and SU to a switch, and the switch to the router, the system will trundle on regardless of what's happening elsewhere.
