Hissing sound from speakers when no music is playing

Posted by: Richard Choong on 15 February 2017

Hi everybody. I just noticed a soft hissing sound from my tweeters when no music is playing (though system is on). Hissing disappears if I mute the volume. Any ideas anyone?

Is this affecting all inputs (connected or not)?

It's perfectly normal

I mute my pre amp and let the tweeters rest when I'm not using my system. It may take a little longer for everything to warm up again but that's just what I do.

Odd. I never noticed it before. Must be quiet at my place tonight.

So it's normal?

Ok...muting my pre from now on!

Don't worry, when you get older you won't hear it anyway.

I think the consensus is that it's normal

There will always be some amount of noise in a system albeit very very quiet - unless it's got significantly louder than it's probably OK.

You're not looking for an excuse to DR your 250?

No excuse needed. That's because I have already placed an order for a 300DR!

You'll still hear a quiet hiss, but it's nothing to worry about. Enjoy that 300 DR when it arrives

The only other thing to do, is check for any snakes under the sofa

Lols. Especially Black Snakes.... IIRC, they hiss less than Grey ones.....

If you find a grey snake that's black inside when it opens its mouth, then watch out, it's a black mamba!

Your speaker have a sensitivity of 89db, so some low hiss is expected.  Upgraded power lines can help reduce the noise, as can PLC's and new power cables.  If you don't hear exorbitant hiss at high volumes, like during moby dick on LZ2 RL, then I would't sweat it.  If so try some power line upgrades.
