MinimServer on Synology Album Art question ?

Posted by: Dr_J on 19 February 2017

Calling Synology/MinimServer users.

The album art, as displayed on iPhone/iPad, latest IOS, latest Naim App version, is either absent, or mismatched, apparently at random........

All album art is correctly displayed in iTunes, well it would be wouldn't it?

Any thoughts, excluding re-ripping all albums greatly appreciated.

Sometimes worth clearing local cache in Naim app and telling MinimServer to re-scan your music store... I've had various periods of "flakiness" when things get out of sync. Give it a shot - it's easy and quick to try.

I'm Synology, but not Minimserver.   I found an art problem with Synology's 'Media Server'.  It may not be anything to do with Minimserver but maybe a clue or two somewhere.    My problem appeared when we went from app series 4 to series 5 (working with the new platform)  Art was low resolution & sometimes not displaying.   I found in DMA Compatibility that the iOS device was no longer defaulted to iOS or Default & is now defaulted to 'XBMC' & the Profile was 'Default Profile'.     XBMC cannot be changed,  but changing Default Profile to Default Profile With Original Cover or Naim n-Stream corrected my art to full (high) res.     I've report it to Naim.  Sorry if this is not applicable with Minimserver,  but maybe, who knows

No need to re-rip your albums! The first question you should address is whether this is a MinimServer problem or a problem of the Naim App.

You can easily answer this question by installing Linn Kazoo (or any other UPnP control point) on your iPad or iPhone. If it displays album art correctly, you do not need to care about MinimServer any further: you have a problem with the Naim App. In this case this forum (and Naim technical support) is the right place where to ask for further advice.

If you observe similar problems on Kazoo (or other UPnP control points) then first force MinimServer to rescan your library. You can do this easily by installing MinimWatch on a computer connected to the same network of your NAS. If you use MinimServer, you should anyway have an instance of MinimWatch running on a LAN connected computer: it is extremely helpful for controlling MinimServer and for managing software upgrades. If rescanning the library does not help, please post the problem on  http://forum.minimserver.com/. Support for MinimServer is excellent and you usually get feedback from the developer within hours.

Good luck, nbpf

Clearing the caches in the Naim app could well sort it. Definitely the first thing to try before rescanning, alternative apps and so on, it only takes a few seconds.

I use MinimServer on Synology and have no problems with Artwork. I go along with a number of the posts which suggest that a rescan of your NAS contents using MinimWatch could resolve the problem.

Have you ever had your artwork displayed correctly on your current Synology NAS, and have you ever used MinimWatch's 'rescan' option? If not, and if you have a problem working out how to do this, just let us know and we can direct you.

The problem you describe will be solved by cleaning the cache. You find this under settings/ source/ upnp/ clear upnp-cache (Einstellungen/Eingänge/upnp/UPNP-Cache löschen).

Just by the way, some album art has never appeared, but for the time being I'll try to fix the cross-referenced artwork by clearing the Naim App cache and rescanning the library.

Yes, I have Minimwatch installed and configured; e.g. Transcoding to WAV works fine.

Thanks, all,

Make sure the media settings on the Synology are correct: Main Menu>Media Server>Browsing Settings>Filenames should have all the variations of Cover.jpg, Folder.jpg etc. and that the cover art in your downloads is name like that and not something specific to the album.

Some albums seem to have very large album art embedded in the files (e.g. 1400x1400 pixels) which seems to be a problem with Minimserver and Linn Kazoo. Replacing the album art with smaller images (e.g. 700x700) usually helps. I don't know if this applies to the Naim app also.

And perhaps worth noting: as long as there is embedded album art in the files, Minimserver will ignore all files like cover.jpg, folder.jpg etc.

I try to have album art files just under 1mb in size. I've never had an issue with Minim or Asset and the Naim App with such.

I have a lot of 1400x1400 pix art, some originally embedded, some added by me.  None are a problem with either the app or Synology Media Server.

Does anyone that uses minimserver know if its possible to add recognition for other artwork formats? I have some .png artwork from the uniticore but the minimserver wont pick it up.

I also use synology media server and was able to add .png to its list, which now works fine. It would be great to fix this with minimserver as im finding the sound quality of minimserver better than synology media server.

iTunes seems to  "embed" or associate the artwork that it finds automatically or via the "get artwork" function in a weird way that Minimserver (& I assume other upnp servers) can't access.  Ive had to use the "add artwork" function from within the "get info" function to manually add artwork (jpg or png files both work fine) to all my ITunes ALAC rips.  This way works fine with Minimserver on my Synology NAS.  This is using Windows, if you are using a Mac,  I believe there is a "Doug script that can automate this process.

My thought - move away from iTunes. Far away.

iTunes has its place, handling music to use on an iPhone.

As a ripper, you can do much better.  And as a music library manager, it just does things too differently, including artwork.  If you intend to use Minim on a Synology nas, you have NO NEED for iTunes and I would get your music re-organized into artist-based folders, and not let iTunes manage anything to do with what you want to play with the Naim App from a Synology nas.
