OS Digital Mapping
Posted by: Don Atkinson on 21 February 2017
I have an i-pad mini 4 with 128Gb and cellular connection, ie it has a GPS chip.
I am planning to add OS digital mapping at 1:25,000 Explorer scale (to either save on buying yet more Explorer maps or to supplement those that I do buy).
The two sources of maps that I am considering are [the OS direct] and [Memory Map].
OS offer a "Premium" service which includes the 1:25,000 Explorer maps at £19.99 per year. Download as much and as often as you like and use off-line. With the annual subscription I presume you will always have access to the latest version of each map.
Memory Map also offers the entire UK for £150 in Standard format or £180 in High Definition format.
I tried the 1 day free trial of the Standard and HD versions from Memory Map today. I must say the detail and colour etc on both maps were every bit as good as the printed map, especially the HD version. For £180 it seems good value and the maps downloaded very quickly even from 4G as well as the internet.
My main concern with Memory Maps is, ......would I be limited to the current (2016/17) versions and would I perhaps need to spend another £180 to update the maps in (say) 5 years time or so ?
OTOH, Does the OS provide their maps in HD version, or is it just Standard definition ? Today, the Standard version loaded from Memory Map was very good, acceptable, so to speak. However, I recently downloaded a 1:25,000 OS map using the Digital Code from the OS paper version. The digital colour was "washed out" and the Rights-of-Way footpaths layer was missing, ie the footpaths were there, but the green overlay designating a Right-of-Way was missing. I wasn’t impressed.
I’m happy with the Memory Map quality, but uncertain about the update aspect.
I’m happy with the update aspect of the OS direct maps, but unsure about the quality I will obtain.
Any advice ?
