Maplins 5m Powerstrip

Posted by: ThatsNotMyNaim on 23 February 2017

Bought a 5m Non-surge/non-filter power strip from Maplins. Cheap job.

My XS2 and my Innuos Zenith sound much nicer when plugged into the strip than the mains socket.

It's more fluid, more natural, silkier. Less jumping out of the mix, more together. Yet there are micro details and transiets coming through I have never heard before. I lose no clarity either?

Plug direct and it feels overblown/more digital/bright.

Anyone explain this?

How long since you last unplugged your power cords?

Recently I've done a lot of chopping and changing. So it's not a change after a long time.

It could be down to many reasons, like the layout of the mains wires - wether any are coiled, the make up the mains cables in the extension. You will have almost certainly changed the impedance of the mains by a small amount that your Naim sees and as we know such changes can cause very small and slight changes in performance and how we perceive such changes within the reproduced audio can be accentuated in its effect... it could have been a filter or extension might have been perceived as to 'rob' the sound of life and vibrancy - its the same sort of thing. If you like it leave it in....

You've altered variables in your system - added sockets and a mains lead to them. A Powerline can have a similar effect to what you've described, albeit the PL's actually a replacement. Sometimes more is less, sometimes more is more.

Could it be that whole system is now plugged into the 'cheap job' (so earthing at a single point) rather than units plugged separately into different wall points, and maybe partly an expensive job?

Thanks for the insight all.

I think i'll leave it in. Seems to work for me.

Maybe with different amps like a Supernait2 or something it might be preferrable direct.

Curious about these powerlines though.
