Is this upgrade worthwhile

Posted by: AngloWelsh on 26 February 2017

My system currently consists of a Naum CDX2.2 with XPS.2, Supernait 2 with HicapDR into PMC24 loudspeakers. I am really satisfied with overall sound quality, depth, definition and musicality.

I am thinking of getting the XPS.2 DR'd by sending it back to Naim at a cost of just over £1000. Will the upgrade be sensible and do any of you know what the differences sonically will be.

I have the option at present to do this upgrade  so would appreciate your comments, particularly from any CDX2/XPS owners.

Best regards David

David,

Good question - I'm thinking of doing the same for my XPS so interested to hear the responses.

Lindsay

Can you get to a Naim Audio dealer for a A/B demo?

An alternative option: to change your XPS.2 for a pre-owned 555PS-DR, which may sound even more desirable to you : )

I am with Debs on this one, try and borrow XPSDR and try with your system at home, only real well to be sure

£1000 plus your CDX2.2 would get you very close to a used CDS3

Thanks for the replies. My dealer has an ex demo XPS DR for sale and suggested that the upgrade of my XPS to DR would be a better cost option to me (£1100 rather than £1700 PX). They are 80 miles from where I live and have been brilliant in the past in setting up, delivering and collecting equipment for me. Perhaps I will speak to them and see if a home demo can be arranged.

This upgrade is certainly worthwhile. I would however first consider adding a S/H nDAC on the CDX2.2 and hooking the XPS2 on the nDAC if you don't have an immediate interest in streaming and/or climbing the upgrade ladder to the highest yet. Otherwise an NDS, possibly a 272, is worth considering before going to separate pre/amps.

Very different presentations though. Some prefer the boogie quality of the CDX2.2 over the more relaxed CDS3. It would be important to listen first.

Yeah - I will talk to the good Dr in Leicester about borrowing a 555 PSU but it's also goo to hear the experiences of chaps on here.

Upgrade path for CDx2.2 (in my opinion) in ascending order of improvement. I have no experience of the DR  versions in this application.

1, CDX2.2

2CDX2.2+ XPS

3. CDX2.2 +555PS

4. CDX2.2 +nDAC /555PS

For that cost you might also consider adding a pre-loved ndac

and I'd add a further one:

5. CDX2.2 + XP5XS to nDAC/555PSDR (yes, it makes a difference to separate out the PSU when using a CDX2.2 as a digital transport)

Well after some deliberation and the opportunity to part ex my XPS 2 for an ex demo XPSDR from my excellent Suffolk dealership, I have just started listening to the new system. Well, after less than an hour the difference is pretty amazing, the soundstage is huge, the whole end of the room is full of sound. The music has come alive, Dire Straits Brothers in Arms on HDCD sounds fantastic! More depth, detail, space, loving this. So if you are in any doubt, give it a try, you wont be disappointed. So STRAT, you asked for some feedback, here it is. I didn't audition the 555PS but am really happy on first listening to the DR version of XPS.

Glad to hear that you're pleased with the result. Don't worry about the 'what if's' with the 555PS. Just sit back and enjoy your upgrade and the re-discovery of much of your music collection.
