Croatia - holiday advice please
Posted by: james n on 28 February 2017
Looking for June / July time frame holidays and wondering about Croatia. Any tips on where to go, not to go ?
Any info / experiences appreciated
James
I played a show in Dubrovnik a few years ago and thought the old town was absolutely beautiful. Strolling around the old streets, then eating locally caught seafood at an outside table on the harbour's edge watching the sun go down over the hills, it was lovely.
Worth a visit, at the least.
We had a week in Dubrovnik a couple of years ago - very nice. The old city's beautiful, and the whole place is small enough for quite a bit of walking. There are quite a few trips out from the harbour. Be warned that beaches in and around Dubrovnik aren't really what you'd expect - they're generally small and shingly.
I went a few years ago with Explore... took us to lots of places & historic sites/sights, apart from Dubrovnik. The island of Pag is worth a visit - for the cheese. And try and get to Zadar to experience the Sea Organ!
Cheers chaps - that gives me a start to the searching.
Thanks again

We went for the first time last July and it was bloody hot! Having said that we really loved the place. We started out in Dubrovnik - just as nice as the posts above describe. We then caught a ferry to the Island of Hvar - a very lively place with some lovely day trips to smaller islands, We then moved on to Split - a fantastic city largely built in and around the Roman emperor Diocletian's palace.
It's all good, though not as cheap as you might imagine - more expensive than Spain but not quite as dear as the French Riviera. I'd certainly go back.
Dubrovnik is a good start. Split is nice too, lots of interesting history - Froggyland makes the mind boggle! Makarska is a lovely little seaside town, and the islands of Hvar and Brac are super places to visit. Korcula is also very nice for a day trip. Zadar for the sea organ of course, and the port of Pomena with its gorgeous lake and monestry.
Ah, happy days...
Super - thanks again
We stayed in Cavtat the year before last which is just outside Dubrovnic. It is stunningly beautiful and a popular harbour for millionaires and their yachts. Excellent food and great scenery and easy to get into Dubrovnic if you want to liven things up. We had an eleven year old with us and it was perhaps a little too quiet for us although there are some all inclusive hotels in the area that have activities etc. For a couple or those without kids its excellent. Mostly restaurants, and some excellent ones, than bars and not a lot of music played throughout the whole area whch was weird and which we missed although there was some good classical concerts during out time there.
Cheers David - will show this and the other replies to the other half. That's my bit of the holiday planning done
If you're interested in wine, or even just drinking it with meals, then look out for Plavac Mali (red, a.k.a. Zinfandel), and Pošip for whites - best from Istria and Hvar Island.
Probably the best/most famous producer is Grgich, but wine in Croatia is usually a small scale family thing meaning that any great discoveries will be bargains, and any disastrous choices will have been cheap. Which is nice.
In fact my very good friend Jo is making wine in Croatia, on Hvar: "Why I am making wine in Croatia" (link to article in English from 'Croatia News' website.
