Contour 20 - Anyone Heard Them?

Posted by: NewNaim16 on 03 March 2017

Hi - Out of curiosity has anyone heard the Dynaudio Contour 20 speakers and have any impressions?

I saw them at the Bristol show but they were not on demo. My experience of Dynaudio is almost zero.

Yes, they are some of the best sounding speakers I have heard, very impressive. The bass is amazing from a stand mount speaker. Compared them directly to the Sopra 1's. My dealer sells both brands, my opinion was the Dyns show them a clean pair of heels.

I thought they - along with a fabulous Naim system including Super Limina cables - were the  most impressive speakers I heard at the Bristol show. Nils Lofgren - Keith Don't Go - was absolutely awe inspiring through them.

Thanks very much guys. Pity, I must've been with Dynaudio at the wrong time to hear the 20. I really, really like our ATC SCM19 speakers, especially in the midrange but think I'll request an audition of the Contour 20.

They will blow your socks off assuming they are driven by decent amplification; suspect 250DR would be minimum they'd need as Dynaudio are generally quite hard to drive. Enjoy. The 20s are definitely on my wish list.

Would love to hear impressions of the ATC 19 v Dynaudio Contour 20 if someone has heard them both.

Have got to be the best looking Dynaudio's so far.

It makes a significant change compared to the  C1 and others. The woofer on the Contour 20 have a smaller 55mm voice coil and a 2nd order crossover instead of 1st order. I don't know why they changed a winning combination that have served them well for more than 2 decades. Lowering manufacturing cost or technical advancement?

There is definitely no cost cutting being done with these new speakers, the proof is in the demo after seeing and hearing these new Contour speakers.

Definitely one of those rare WOW moments!

The Dynaudio Contour 20 really impressed me at the show, quite special indeed I thought.

I even went back after seeing the rest of the show just to confirm that what I heard the first time around was not lost, it turned out they were even better!

Quite a few Dyn fans among these parts.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll go and listen to the Contour 20 myself and report back on my preference, although it'll be in a few weeks time.

We dealer auditioned the Dynaudio Contour 20 speakers but decided they weren't for us. We simply can't give them the space that they need to breath and using the limited gap to the wall that we can accommodate, the bass overwhelmed the midrange - at least for our preferences. Given the rear ported design, this wasn't a total surprise but we had to try. This is nothing against the Contour 20 but they just weren't right for us.

It was however, a reminder as to how good and what great value, the ATC SCM19 speakers are for our situation.

Have you tried PMC's Twenty5 range? I am rather happy with our Twenty5.23. We also have issues with rear ported speakers in our lounge, so PMC's front-ported ATL works really well for us.

The Contour 20 doesn't look too good to me. Ditto the Confidence range. The older Dynaudio Focus range looks better.

Good to know that the ATC SCM19 sounds better than the Contour 20 in the context of your system and ears. The SCM19 looks much better and classier than the Contour 20. Of course, all IMO.

As part of the original evaluation last year I tried the PMC Twenty.23 but preferred the ATC SCM19 which I'm very happy with. However, I wanted to check out the Contour 20 after hearing some positive comments.

With the ATC SCM19 it sounds as much more as though singers are in the room. Our granddaughter thinks the SCM19 looks much more modern than her father's speakers which is a bonus!

I think the Twenty5 range is quite a different animal to the old Twenty. We listened to both, and went for the Twenty5 even though there were quite a few really good Twenty bargains available...

yes they were on a demo day I went to yesterday, not heard any Dynaudio speakers before - they were match with the new NAIM NOVA - out in June - i did feel they needed a bigger source than the NOVA could offer tobe honest,  something like the 250DR would be a good match - not cheap at nearlly 5K - musically very good presentation, dynamic and netural base - if you are looking for a good small speaker I would put them in the mix to be honest - NOVA Dynaudio Contour 20, SL speaker cables - loved the NOVA though

I have a pair C20 in route to me. Will be here early next week. Major change for me the past couple of weeks. The addition of 272/250, a second Powerline, XPS DR arriving tomorrow and now new speakers. Looking forward to getting it all settled and enjoying the music again and not worrying about upgrading anything for a while.

Brilliant. You are in for a treat I'm sure; they are fabulous speakers. What finish on the Contours did you go for?

I hope so. It was a blind buy but for the price I can sell on if I don't like. Walnut finish.
