Muso and usb (mass storage device)
Posted by: analog414 on 03 March 2017
Hello everyone. Just bought the Muso. Has anyone tested what the limit is on the USB FAT32 mass storage device are? Volume size? Folder & readable music files? My 256 GB flash drive works but I am trying to connect my FAT32 2 TB HDD but it won't read it. This HDD is my car stereo file player and most of the files are 24bit/192khz. I am bummed I can't just move this HDD from car to Mu-So.
I suspect the USB connection doesn't provide power to the drive.
Generally speaking, Naim USB connections don't like USB HDDs but have no problem with USB sticks. I don't think it's a capacity thing. I have seen occasionally that someone mentions that they got a USB HDD working, but I never managed it.
I don't think it's just a matter of power because just for interest I have tried a mains powered USB HDD into the USB on the front of my SuperUniti and that didn't work either.

Interesting to hear that a mains powered drive doesn't work either.
Just a thought which may well be off track. The issue may be related to the way FAT32 adjusts cluster sizes as the drive volume increases. It may well be that the Naim implementation has problems with some cluster sizes. Perhaps a question for the technical folk at Naim?

Thanks for the replies. I am about to buy a bunch of different drives and test this out. Looks like trail and error. I will post what I find. Regards Rick
Here are the results of my HDD tests to connect to the Mu-So:
Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 1TB Internal Drive (with enclosure): CONNECTED
Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 2TB Internal Drive (with enclosure): DID NOT CONNECT
Western Digital My Passport 1TB Portable: DID NOT CONNECT
Western Digital My Passport 2TB Portable: DID NOT CONNECT
Toshiba 1TB Portable Canvio Basics: CONNECTED
Seagate Expansion 1.5TB Portable: CONNECTED
Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB Portable: CONNECTED
All tests of course formatted to FAT32 with one folder and one WAV file @ 24bit/192khz. I wonder if there is a limited amount of folders and/or readable music files.?
Did the various HDD use the old Master Boot Record (limited to 2TB) or the newer GUID Partition Table?
In my own testing with an external USB HDD, it wasn't the drive size that was the problem, but that the MuSo will only play the tracks in the order they appear on the HDD - it will not play from a playlist on the HDD.
I'm now working on getting an RPi3 to act as a streamer with the USB HDD attached...

Good question. All drives were new. Only the internal drives I had to initiate. But all started at NTSF and I used this program to format to FAT32.

Would love to know here what exactly connected to the Mu-So and add to the list.

It was a WD My Passport 2TB external USB HDD with a GUID Partition Table

Interesting! None of the GPT drives would connect. But I see the drives that are MBR will connect. This is all new to me and I am glad you chimed in. Now I will try to change the partition on one of the GPT to MBR and see what gives.
You sure your Passport connected fine? I could not get any of them to connect and I see they are GPT.
I'm in the U.A.E. at the moment and the MuSo is in France so I cannot double check.
I notice that the HDD is reported has having "valid GPT with protective MBR", so perhaps that explains it.
..but again, the fact that the MuSo can only play the tracks from the HDD in the order that it finds them renders the point a little moot, no?
