New to Naim

Posted by: cariboukid on 03 March 2017

Hello all. New guy here. I'm not new to audio but am completely new to Naim.

I recently downsized and simplified my system from a Bryston 4b sst2 amplifier/PrimaLuna Prologue 3 tube preamp combo to a Peachtree Nova150 (150wpc into 8ohm) integrated. Quite a change indeed but one I've come to enjoy. The Stones are blasting away as we speak

Speakers are Energy Veritas 2.2i's which are a 3 way bass reflex, rear vent design standmount. They are 8ohm nominal but can drop down to 4 and are 89db/w/m in efficiency. I've had them since new in 2004. They have played well with a variety of amps, the main reason they have stuck around my household for so long. Great speakers.

I've recently purchased a Naim Nait 5si, my very first foray into the world of Naim. I don't have it yet, the seller is shipping it out today and I should have it by mid-week at the latest. I'm very excited about this purchase and quite curious as to how my music will sound through my Veritas being driven by this amp. My sources are an Oppo BDP-105 universal player and a vintage mid-level JVC turntable with an Ortofon 2m Bronze cart and Moon LP-110 phono stage.

I'm confident that the 5si will be able to drive my Veritas with no difficulty. However...I have a chance to pick up a pair of Dynaudio Emit 20's and I've read on this Forum in many different places how well Naim and Dynaudio mate with each other. The 20's are a small bookshelf but less efficient than my Veritas at 86db and are a 4ohm load.

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the 5si and this particular model of Dynaudio and how well, or not, the 5si would be able to drive them. My listening position is about 8 feet from the speakers in a room about 12' x 25. Speakers and gear are on the long wall.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Could be an interesting opportunity to listen to speakers that your familiar with hooked up to a Naim. And a different speaker to audition. Could get complicated, best be pragmatic and have a note book and pen handy to make notes.

i didn't hear the exact combination you mention, but i did have an extended listen to the Nait 5si and the Dynaudio Focus 260, a much larger speaker and probably a tougher load for the amp. i thought the Nait drove them with no problem. sounded great, in fact!

but i concur with Tobyjug above that you should try the Nait with your current speakers first, so you can have a better basis for comparison. i'd be surprised if you go back to the Peachtree -- but am eager to hear how you get on, either way.

The Emits are well reviewed but are only a £600 speaker. It has to be highly likely that the current speakers are better. I'd get the Nait, see if you like it and get used to it at home. If you like it then try alternative speakers if you want, but only buy them after a home demonstration. You may also find that improving your sources pays greater dividends.

Well that's encouraging

I went ahead and bought a pair of Dynaudio Db1+ on the used market here in Canada. I like to play around with different gear so I'll be a kid in a candy store next week when the amp and speakers arrive. I'll be able to make many different comparisons with various combinations. Who knows? I might keep it all or sell some off. I must admit, while not trying to get ahead of myself, that I could sell the Peachtree and the 5si and move up the Naim chain. Mmwahahahaha  We'll see how it goes.

Hmm, i tried adding a photo of my Energy's from Photobucket but this is what I got instead:

As someone who has had the chance to own a Nait 5i and use it with Dynaudio Excite X16s, Focus 160s and Focus 260s, then later an XS with the 160s and 260s. The X16/5i was my second favorite setup I've owned. My current 260/Uniti2 is my favorite setup to date. I did feel that the 5i played better with the 260s then with the 160s, probably due to the sensitivity of the speakers. I use to own Energy C300s not the Veritas at all but going from Energy to Dynaudio was a nice upgrade. I won't say Veritas to Emit will be the same, but I think the Emits could impress.

What at are the DB1+?

I'm happy to hear that the 5si can handle a 4 ohm load. Good stuff

Ive owned many Energy speakers over the years and you're right, the newer line can't compete with the older Veritas.

In my above post I inadvertently named the DB1+'s as Dynaudio. I can't go back and edit it so please disregard. The DB1+'s are actually PMC.

Ok, makes sense. I've heard the DB1 before in some iteration. It was a good speaker. Rich, warm, good bass.

I have a very lively room although I've managed to tame it down to an enjoyable state. I think the PMC's will be a great match for the room and the 5si.

I have a lively room also. They should pair well the 5i is a little more of an energetic sound to it and the PMCs are a like I said warm and rich so combined they should compliment one another nicely. The 5i doesn't liked to be pushed super hard tho, that's the point I traded it in, it would get shouty when pushed too hard driving my 160s. Perhaps the 5si will handle being pushed hard easier, and I mean pushed hard, not playing loud, but really pushing.

The PMC DB1+ are tiny speakers but from what I've read they retain their composure when played hard. Will be interesting to see which amp keeps up better with them, as well as my 2.2i's; the Nova 150 or the 5si. I do hope the 5si doesn't run out of gas as I do like to push it from time to time

Since those DB1+ have been out in the wild, I have read about many systems which have been massively over specified getting the beans out of them. Never under estimate the littluns.

You're a wise man Tobyjug

Trying to figure out how to post a photo on this site. My usual way that I use on other audio forums doesn't seem to work here. Lets see...

They've served me well

I had their bigger brother, the Veritas 2.3's, up until recently. Great speakers but these have always sounded better to me.

Just a quick update to this. Received my 5si today. For the record, it absolutely trounces the Peachtree Nova 150.
