Naim app - SuperUniti
Posted by: janc333 on 03 March 2017
Ever since buying a MUSO having trouble locating Super Uniti on my naim app. It drops in and out - like the Muso appears and pushes out the Super Uniti. Given that the kit linked to the Super Uniti where the bulk of my Naim investment sits it's more than a little irritating,
Could it be that the Superuniti is in an area where this a weaker Wifi signal. I easily find my Muso on the Naim app, as it is right by the wireless router, whereas my main 272/250 system connection to the app is flaky because it is furthur away.
Thank you kiwi cat . Probably the opposite, I have the SuperUniti on an Ethernet connection precisely to stop it being flakey as it's the real 'hifi' system. SuperUniti is there for a while in 'room' then it just disappears, often mid album!
This may suggest IP assignment issue on your home network.
Few questiosn, to help with a diagnosis:
1. Are you using a switch? If so which one?
2. What are the network attached devices?
3. Do you hse internet-over-mains by any chance?
4. Can you reliably stream iRadio / Tidal / Spotify?
5. What is the NAIM app version that you have?

So when it streams what does the buffer screen say on the SuperUniti (assuming it has one) is the buffer empty?
if so I'd say you need to isolate the issue, so try
1) issue with your Ethernet connection, and it's not providing enough throughput. Check wiring and ensure you are using proper Ethernet and not data over mains devices or similar.
2)your media server has an issue, it can stream consistently with out running out of data.. try another media server connected locally to a seperate switch and the SuperUniti...does that work?
3)if despite 1 and 2 you still have an issue take SuperUniti back to dealer for possible fault..but I suspect this is unlikely.

Maybe there's a more simpler reason to your problem. I fear that the efforts of all young Naim engineers have focused on products such as MU SO, consumer products aimed at a wider segment of the market
Naim in recent years has changed his philosophy; no more HI END brand but a brand for everyone
that's why products like MU SO works better than in something for which we should invest a substantial amount of money.
When I open the official Naim website I realize that the real Naim product is only a memory .
This is my personal opinion and is reinforced on my personal experiences with my SU, fantastic sound machine when it works
I'd say the problems started with the first MUSO linked NAIM app (before I had a MUSO) which confirms your opinion. I will try some of the helpful advice I've received from form members and see.
Thank you to those of you that highlighted my internet over mains connection. doh. It was set up that way by my Naim dealer! Icon seems to show up everytime now. Must have been small interference in the mains was knocking the SuperUniti off.
It would be worth replacing the Ethernet over mains with a length of Ethernet cable, it it's possible. I take one of my connections out through the wall of the house, along the wall for 10m and in through the wall again to avoid it trAiling round the room or over/under fitted carpets. That works

Unfortunately Ethernet Over Mains links are often a weak point in any setup - people presume that they are the same as a wired link but experience has taught otherwise.
Thanks SiS / Adam / etc. for your input on this one - The MD raised it to me at the weekend but I was away so couldn't take a look til now.
Cheers
Phil

Hi,
I'm sorry that you feel that we have changed philosophy and have gone "no more hi end" however I would hope that projects such as Statement / 272 etc. would confirm our continued commitment to high end.
When we released the Uniti series (starting with the Uniti some eight years ago) we had some similar comments and yet that has brought quality audio to so many people who would never have considered separates, similarly the Mu-so range has introduced tens of thousands of people to the Naim brand with many of them going on to buy Uniti or 'proper' systems.
The Mu-so and Uniti range all use identical networking protocols and as far as the Naim app is concerned they work in the same way - the only difference being the functionality offered by each device ... they have been designed to work together and there is no reason why a Mu-so should "work" better or worse than any other Naim streamer assuming that the network that it sits on is working correctly and this is where most reported issues do end up being identified as.
You wouldn't spend good money on a decent hifi setup and speakers then use a run of bell-wire to connect up your speakers because 'it's easier and cheaper' and yet I'm sure that people will ask you why you spend £30 or more a metre on speaker cable because to them it's just wire, and in the same way to many people their network is simply some unknown thing that gets data from one place to another by some kind of magic that they don't even think about until some part of it doesn't work right ... As you can obviously see from the diagnosis process here (which both Adam and Simon dived into headfirst - thank you guys) the issue seems to again be a piece of 'convenience' network hardware, in this case the original posters Ethernet Over Mains adapters, which we always try to dissuade people from using as we know from experience (and I'm sure there are many examples of buried in forum thread history) that these kinds of convenience shortcuts can cause problems.
Ethernet Over Mains adapters - like wireless extenders / repeaters - are rather cludgy workarounds to actually resolving baseline network problems properly ... think of it like using a 252 / 300 with Sopra 3's and then taking the speaker outputs of the 300 into a wireless sender, using that to send to a wireless receiver attached to your speakers and then wondering why it doesn't sound as good as when you were using a run of NAC-A5 to connect them up.

I think there is an issue with the Naim app on ipad at least - it regularly drops connection to my Super Uniti - this became a regular occurrence with the most recent updates to the app while Everything else is the same and i have a very good home network (eero) and run the superuniti on Ethernet vs. wireless (which used to be an issue as well). The app used to work very consistently and with very few issues, now while using the Naim app to control the super uniti on both of my ipads (air and air2) the screen will start to blank out (features/graphics missing) and ultimately it looses connection. I need to 'kill' the app on the ipad (by double clicking the home button and then swiping 'up' on the app to stop it) and restart the naim app to have it work properly again.
there are a lot of negative reviews on the Apple Store site as well - sorry Naim guys but you might want to look at the reliability of the app and the efficiency with which it runs - seems as features have been added the app is taking more resources in the ipad or has some memory leak type issues?
Suggestion - please start supporting Roon on the Uniti Series (I love my Super Uniti!). Oh, and why build Uniti Core with only one hard drive bay? It would be great to see support for 2+ SSD in hte core with Roon Server support. Just a suggestion.
Yep, I've posted a 'Reconnecting' post. Getting slightly annoying.

Hi Guys,
If you contact us directly (contact details are in the stickies or on the right) then we'll try to get more info from you to try to find out why you are getting these issues.
We've got tens of thousands of users of the Naim app and I'd wager that no one setup is exactly the same as any other so although I know that it's annoying for you whilst using the app it's not an underlying issue that affects everyone so it would be appreciated if you'd contact us directly so that we can start to find out exactly why it's affecting you and not us on any of our test systems here or at our own homes.
Cheers
Phil
Thanks Phil, will do!
