Another Tellurium Q question
Posted by: Amused on 04 March 2017
I am deciding whether to take the plunge and get one of the TQ speakers cables to go with my SN and Dynaudio speakers. TQ cables seem to get a lot of love on this forum.
The options are (price ascending):
1. TQ Black (much discussed on this forum)
2. TQ Silver (not much info) - there is a newer version as well which is called Silver II
3. TQ Ultra Blue (it appears to be a rebadged Green)
4. TQ Ultra Black
The main issue for me is the length. Does the Naim recommendation regarding the minimum length apply with this cable? If not, I could go higher up the ladder and get a shorter length of a more expensive (and probably better) cable.
I've read a lot on this forum and elsewhere regarding the improved clarity and resolution of TQ cables over the NACA5, but I am most concerned about the low frequencies and the ability of these cables to produce deep and well defined bass.
Opinions?
I use black with my SN. They are excellent! The Ultra blacks are even better, at a price. Lengths aren't so critical with the integrated amps.
Btw TQ green is now blue diamond. Above silver, but below ultra black.
I wouldn't go with silver with Naim gear. Particularly if you love your bass.
Amused,
I'm currently using a 2.5 meter pair of TQ Blue Diamond speaker cable with my SN2, and am happy with it. No issues whatsoever.
I love what they do but the only way to find out if they work for you is to try them at home..
I had Blue Diamonds in mind but wrote Ultra Blue by mistake.
Did you get the chance to directly compare the Blacks to the Blue Diamonds?
If length is not an issue, I might as well go for the Ultra Blacks.
So the Silver is to be avoided, right?
Ultra black are the best on the list. That's just my opinion. You'd really have to try the silvers in your system with your speakers. I've heard them and there's plenty of detail as you'd expect with silver. But I felt they were bass light, which I'm not keen on. I haven't compared the blue diamonds to the blacks. I decided to stick with the black 'family'. Demoing ultra blacks at the moment.
I tried all of your 4 choices at home and they all work well. Ultra Black is undoubttebly the best one, if money's not a problem. Silver has tighter, slightly less bass, ( in my setup anyway)but a very open top end, not agressive mind you.
Ok, thanks guys.
Do you think 2m of TQ Ultra Black would be good enough for the SN1 (and do no harm to the amp)?
It be fine
I think modern Naim amps behave much better with shorter speaker cables than vintage ones. I did try a 2m pair of Naca5 without apparent problems with my then SN, but it was too much of a tight fit here (and pricing of that cable did not matter much anyway...)
Hope this helps.
And my final question: TQ Ultra Black vs NACA5? What to expect here (primarily in the bass department)? How is the TQ in terms of PRaT?
For me, the Black did what the naca5 did, but better. The Ultra blacks are a leap forward in performance again. Myself and some others feel the Ultra black outperforms the superlumina. But each to their own.
The main thing for me about TQ cables is I find they do not alter Naim's main qualities like rythmic pace, and enhance their ability to follow any instrument in the orchestra.
I feel I only gained in bass weight and definition, with what I currently have. UB's a better cable still.
I had the Chord Epic Reference but didn't like it eventually and returned it for a refund.
So I need to make the right choice now. I guess it's the Ultra Black then. I have no chance to hear it before buying, so will have to take your word on it as it will be a blind buy.
I doubt you'll be disappointed. They do need plenty of time to burn in and settle down. All TQ cables can be returned if you're not entirely happy.
Does their burn in CD make a difference?
It helped speed up the burn in in my case.

I'm using a TQ black 2.5 meter with great satisfaction. For me a definitive cable that will not replace in the future
Well, 1m of length makes a great difference in price, so I will most likely go for the 2m version.
Do their Z plugs fit the Naim amps nicely?

Yes with standard banana plugs
I also read in the Forum that Naits are less fuzzy about cable length, but to be on the safe side I emailed Phil from Naim. He didn't confirm these rumours in the Forum, but said that 3.5m minimum (when using NACA5) remained in place for Naits. When using different cables, Phil recommended approaching manufacturers for advice.
Amused,I used a cheap 2 dollars a foot speaker cable when I had my SN2,that my local dealer has in a big roll, and he recommends...I believe it was 3m lengths I had,it worked great.I would spend my money on a high cap dr first I I were you, much more improvement than any cable will bring.
I use Ultra Blacks with my NAP 300. They made this amp soooo much better, which is no mean feat as it is truly an accomplished amp. they just made everything more coherent and real. Natural sums it up best probably. You just stop listening for hifi stuff and listen to the music.

I tried both with my SN. I found them both great upgrades. I went with the HC as I'm heading for a 282 and my dealer gave me a great deal. Of course you do need another snaic, so that cost must be added

A HCdr is certainly a good move forward but TQ cables are exceptional, and without question they do make a considerable difference ....
The HCDR is already on order, delivery in 2 weeks.
I placed an order for a 2m pair of TQ Ultra Blacks as well. We'll see how it goes.
Should I be looking at TQ interconnects as well?
