ATC speakers with Uniti2
Posted by: Parlow on 04 March 2017
Hello,
In what seems like a never ending search to upgrade my speakers the one that remains to be auditioned is the ATC SCM 19. I have heard, on here and elsewhere, that with a 250DR it's really good. Ultimately I want to add that power amp, but that upgrade is at least 18months away. In the mean time I don't want to be stuck with a set of speakers that couldn't be driven properly. I live in rural Cumbria and auditioning these will be an absolute pain. So any advice before I make a trip to Birmingham would be greatly appreciated.
BTW the current front runners on the short list are Focal Electra 1008Be, which sounded really fun, but will cost another grand.
It would be useful to know what your current system is - perhaps you could add it to your profile.
Hello,
The current system is a Uniti2 with Castle Pembroke speakers and chord speaker cable. I mainly listen to electronica, indie, rock and pop.
Sorry, it said 'Uniti' in the title. Durr. I certainly wouldn't use something like the ATCs with the Uniti, not even with a 250 added, as the source and preamp would still only be the Uniti. I'd suggest you are going about things the wrong way - sort out the electronics first and then get speakers to match.
I use a U2 with Dynaudio Focus 260s and I love the combo. Never heard ATC speakers but 8 ohm won't be difficult for the U2. I've seen the U2 power 85 db/ 4 ohm speakers and do very well. My general opinion of this forum is source first as long as you buy only a 282/250dr/NDX/US/SC setup.
Err... Sorry you can also buy a muso but only if you're going to use it in the kitchen or a closet!

Lol. You obviously can't properly drive your Focus 260 with your U2. Those need a minimum of 250 or it will sound like rubbish.

I'd add a 250 but then I still only have my U2 as a source... Which means I better win the lottery to buy $16,000 worth a separates after I trade in my U2!
You're one to talk! How dare you use a U2 with scansonics! Those ribbons will show how horrible that front end of yours truly is!!

I blush at the thought of upgrading the 2.5 to MB5 with just the U2. It will surely sound horrible.

If you're doubling speakers then you need to really consider Naim Statements!! The 500 series would sound like crap!!
Tell the wife she can divorce you if there's any money left after you sell the house!

Talked it over with my wife and no go on the Statenent. Guess I'll have keep the Uniti 2 for now and suffer the horrible sound a bit longer.

Why did you ask? And I never implied she'd be ok with it!
I have SCM11s with my U2 and I love the sound. I do intend to go the 272/250DR way at some point in the future, where I expect I will climb the ATC range also.
Since you're not talking about getting a 272 for your 250DR, I'd suggest getting the 11s instead of the 19s. If you ever go 272/250DR, then the 19s would be more suited to those electronics.
