Using NAIM amp in 100V Japan
Posted by: mrgoosey on 08 March 2017
Hi all,
Are there any NAIM users living in Japan out there? I'm a Brit in Tokyo and looking at buying one of the NAIM amps, but had some anxiety that there would be some problem with the amp being powered on Japanese 100V power. I understand they can be set to 110V - can you buy them in this state, and would there be any issue? I understand both the device and the outlet can vary +/- 10% either side.
There's no dealer out here so I'd likely have to buy myself in the UK next time I'm back or get sent to me.
Best

Mr G, try a search on the forum. There have been a number of threads on this in the recent past.
Do you know the voltage and frequency opt the mains where you are going? - IIRC Japan has different voltages and frequencies in different areas. A couple of our members have commented on this in the past so well worth digging up the old threads.

Thanks Richard. I've searched but found no definitive answer. I live in Tokyo currently (no pun intended) where it is 100V 50hz.

Its quite simple.... The North of Japan, is 100V AC, 50 Hz - while the South is 100v AC 60Hz.
Nice pic in Wikipedia explains all - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...er_Grid_of_Japan.svg
Why is it like that....? Well, the North was done by the Germans (AEG) - while the South was done by the US (GE) - so Wikipedia tells me.....

[@mention:69426746559974305] I've commented on this many times in a number of threads. I'm in the greater Tokyo area (Kawasaki) and have not had any problems using 115v Naim gear here. There is a +/- 10% tolereance on the transformers and the actual votage in Japan is generally 103.9v; slightly more than the official 100v. But getting a multimeter out and testing where you are is never a bad idea.
You're biggest issue here will be ensuring proper earthing. As you know, it just isn't taken seriously out here. Don't bother unless you have access to proper 3 holed sockets - and even then it is worth taking a look behind them to see if the earth is actually connected to anything or just for show.

Agree. No Issues with my (115V) NAP140 and HiCap here in Tokyo.

Interesting! Did not know that there were Naim users in Japan, always thought that I was the only one.
I am from Roppongi Hills, Minato-ku, Tokyo, as far as I can tell, there is no issue with Naim devices importing from the US.

Thanks Banzai, I'm also in Minato-ku just down the road in Shirokane.
I'm thinking of buying from a US dealer, and have a parcel re-routing service courier it over to me here.

Just bear in mind:
- Resale value of Naim gear in Japan is next to nothing. If you want to climb the Naim ladder you are looking at keeping everything for use in other rooms or selling abroad. I had a fairly new 282 appraised by an ex Naim dealer at not much more than GBP500 and he advised me not to sell because there's no way to get a fair price on it here.
- Servicing costs. You will need to get things repaired and recapped at a Naim authorised centre outside of Japan. And you can get hit with customs both ways on stuff you already own and have all the right paperwork for. Many of my past posts are tales of woe involving rediculous customs charges on things going back to the mothership for servicing.
If you can deal with both of those limitations, then rock on!

Thanks for the warnings, I will bear in mind!
I think I'm quite fixed on a NAIM now, there's really nothing in the domestic market here that is jumping out at me.
