Moving to Germany - Anyone have the 110v to 230v modification done?

Posted by: ThomasN on 09 March 2017

I have a Naim Nait XS and I'm moving from the US 110v/60hz to Germany 230v/50hz.

I could purchase a step-down transformer to reduce 230v mains into 110v or I could take the integrated amp to a NAIM repair center to have the power supply changed to accept 230v.

Has anyone done this?

For the people who have done this, I would like to ask if you noticed and improvement in sound over using the step-down transformer method?

What size step-down transformer is optimum?  Will 500W be enough?

Are there any risks to having this modification done?

What is a fair charge to have this done?

Thanks for the advice.

Thomas,

please don't use a step down transformer - they do the performance of the kit no favours at all.  Your best bet is to contact the German distributor Musicline - they're very good by the way.  They can then tell you whether it can be converted to 230V (some can, some can't, I can't remember on the NAIT XS) and what the cost would be.  If it can't be converted then it is best sold Stateside and then replacement bought once in Germany.

Thanks Richard..

I will be packed and heading for Germany so there will not be enough time to sell the Nait XS Stateside.   I bought this unit in 2009 and it has been in storage most of the time due constant moving with my career path.  I will check with Musicline after I am settled in Stuttgart Germany.  I also have a 2X Flatcap that will need to be converted.   I am also hoping someone reads this thread and responds with a description of how major the modification is.   I would like to understand how many components need to be changed since I would be returning the US after 3 years and need to change it all back to 110v.

Most Naim kit is a case of rewiring the mains transformer, changing the fuse and rear label.

However some need a new transformer, which is a big job and expensive. You could ask the factory by email which yours is on the XS.
