Unitiserve .wav

Hello to all. Im new here and also pretty new to Naim world. But Im old hifi freak Im just started with Unitiserve 2Tb and trying hard to find out is there any possibility when you ripp in .wav to hide or make ripps without .wav at the end of every song? If Im maybe not clear ( with my english) also I dont want to files be saved with names of songs together with .wav at the end of every song. Im streaming also files through Sonos and every song there have also .wav at the end of song. Its kind of annoying to have that on every song. Thanx for any input.

It's all about what you are using to control the Unitiserve. If for example you use n-serve for IOS you don't see the file extension (.wav or whatever).

The file has to be saved with .wav at the end so the player knows what sort of file it is playing with. But most control software hides that sort of detail away from the users.

Perhaps a good Idea also is to rip in .flac. I tried both and found no difference with my Userve 2TB. It has to be, I know, big discussion, but .flac is easier to handle with more devices..

I'm not a UnitiServe user  but I used to work on one for a disabled friend. (Since sold & he now has a NAS,  far more sensible it seems).   Is it correct that the US rips in a form of WAV that does not include standard WAV metadata ????   I ask because following the advice of this forum I converted all his US default standard WAV rips to FLAC before I moved them over to his NAS.

Standard WAVs don't include metadata so Naim has a proprietary way of doing it which includes a specific folder structure and metadata file in the album folder along with album artwork with a standard filename. It works fine in the Unitiserve but isn't really portable. FLAC does avoid all of that uncertainty.

There has always been a way to store metadata in wavs but it was limited, but for a while wavs can have metadata added using the same format that is used by Mps called ID3, see list at http://wavmetadata.blogspot.co.uk/

The issue is just that US doesn't write metadata to the files themselves and I suspect Sonos is displaying '.wav' simply because it cannot find any metadata in the file so resorts to displaying the filename instead, so if your Sonos is just using US as a remote harddrive then you could use another tool to add metadata and Sonos should be able to read it. I dont have a US but I do have wavs and a Sonos so I  have double checked that this works, I had a folder of songs representing an album where the composer field was set in the metadata. Once I added the folder to Sonos I could find the files by the composer, this must be because it was reading the metadata rather than the folder structure since the value of the artist name is not the same as the composer name

Thanx guys!  I was using Bluesound vault until US and there one could do whatever you want it with files via pc or mac. Re-name, remove extensions,  make for instance double cd as one etc etc. which is cool. US is kind of short of those things for users but on the other hand have better sound without doubt.

If you use UnitiServe as a UPnP server into NAIM only track names (no file extension) is displayed.

When I use the same files, running off a NAS via MinimServer into my Yamaha Network Player (NPS200) the display shows the annoying .WAV extention. The reason for that is that US rips do not have that much metadata attached to them.

I suspect SONOS behaves the same way. So now you have an excuse to get a Naim streamer, or at least a NAIM DAC and stream directly from your UnitiServe

Or just add metadata to your songs using some tag editor software, a considerably cheaper option !

Metadatics is good - easy to use too.

Metadatics is quite good but I have just been trying out SongKong and it worked really well

I've used my Unitiserve into a Yamaha and a Sony streamer as well as Naim, and the file extension has never been visible in any of them. All very mysterious - to me, anyway!
