Upgrading 62/HiCap/140

Posted by: Clive Gidney on 10 March 2017

I'm currently using this chrome bumper amp combination (serviced  about 8 years ago) with a Linn Majik DS or LP12/Ittok/Lingo front end into Kudos C2 speakers but I think the amp combination is probably the weak link in the system.

Looking at the second hand market it seems that a 2012 vintage 202/200 combination can be found for about £2000, or alternatively should I stick with my 62 and look for a 250 which seem to be similar money for that vintage.

What are anybodies thoughts?

I'd not swap your present combo for a 202/200. If you don't mind straying from the CB style then a 72 would be good or even look for an 82 or the ultimate, a 52. The 140 will do for now but with a pre-amp sorted out, a 250 would be a good step. Somewhere like Tom Tom Audio with its collection of older kit might be a good place to start.

Do not swap your CB. It's a classic NAIM sound.
If anything you could try and source a mint example of NAP 250 in CB.

I like my 250s - Olive came back from NAIM spa in December. Sounds amazing now.

If you go the 202/200 way you should really have a listen first as you might not like there sound. I think a CB 250 would be the best option.

my advice is slightly different I had a CB 62/HICAP/140 which I kept for a while (infact the HC is still with me) after I bought my first 'black boxes' 122x/FCXS/150 and I preferred the black boxes right up until 202/hc/200 when I sold the 62/140 to a nice man in China.  So I would say of course demo but if it where me I would be going 202/200 be aware though that you 100% need a NAPSC for a 202 SQ wise so another 150 pounds or so.

It's going to be laugh-a-minute in the canteen on Monday morning over this. 'You know what mates, we've been going backwards for the last thirty years!'  ;-)
