NDX automation function
Posted by: PTCM on 11 March 2017
Quick question on the NDX automation function.
I am currently connecting NDX's remote out 1 to 202 Preamp, so that I can control the volume from Naim app on ipad.
Now, I would like to control
1) NDAC input
2) NAT 05 Tuner's(non XS version) preset channel function up and down from the Naim app on ipad.
It that possible given there's only 1 more remote out 2 available on NDX?
If yes, how could I connect them ?
many thanks in advance.

So far as I know, the only thing the Naim App will control on a Naim pre-amp (with mechanical volume control) is volume. Someone will surely correct me if I've missed something!
I use this with my NDS / SN2. For volume.
Section 2.11 of the NDX manual explains this. You can connect two things, including a preamp or the nDac. The tuner is not mentioned. Again, according to the manual, it says that connecting a preamp enables you to select its inputs from the Naim app.
Y-splitters expand remote capacity. My dealer gave me one free. The manual does not suggest this.
Thus I can control NDX, nDAC, NAC, and CD all using Naim App or Narcom etc.

I have the 555 and NDX connected to the 552. Thus the app allows me to select all inputs (including NAT01, TV, DVD) and control the CD player. It's ace, and a significant factor in keeping the NDX despite using an external DAC.
I believe I found I did not use the RC-Out from the nDAC - daisy-chain from NDX to DAC to NAC did not work; all three needed to be connected directly to NDX.

NDX clearly shows it has two remote outputs. Connect nDAC and PRE to those. Connect the tuner to nDAC.
2) NAT 05 Tuner's(non XS version) preset channel function up and down from the Naim app on ipad.
You cannot control NAT-05 preset station selection with System Automation, this is still with NARCOM or Mk-I pinky.
Incase you haven't activated NAT-05 on iPad; app 'Settings' (gearwheel top right corner) >Input Settings>Pre Tuner - Enable "input enabled" (You can change the Input name to whatever you choose) This opens an Icon on the app screen home page. System Automation gives you volume & mute but nothing else.

Adam,
I found that my Naim DAC will not relay RC from NDX to CD555, but a Y-adapter at the NDX gives me a working third connection.
RC Out from the DAC enables Narcom calls to 7, 8, 9, and 0 to switch the NAC to the DAC input. You have to trade this convenience for the more powerful capabilities of the NDx, e.g. Naim App operation of my CD555.
That is what Naim told me. Do you find otherwise?
Another detail is Steve Hokpins responded to my Support inquiry E-mail and said NEVER to use a Y-adapter, which advice my local dealer overrided by providing me said Y-adapter. Maybe Steve was pulling my leg?

You mean you can control NDAC's input selection from ipad app also ?
I seem to recall RC Out from the DAC may also relay commands to the NAC in response to button-presses on the DAC itself. It has been a while, so I am not positive this is true.

Precisely; and the NAC and CD operations. And, the NDX Uniti-style remote will do all, too. I liked the remote a lot better after I finally got it set up properly -- brilliant. The remote is not as good as the App for selecting streaming songs, but it excels at everything else, especially input-selection and FM presets on my NDX-FM.

Nick - that's how we also use our systems. I programmed all 'system automations' so that each system works the same way.
As to nDAC and Y-cable. Never used one, so canno offer any comment / advice.
Adam,
Before I had the NDX, I used RC Out from DAC to NAC to good effect. Added NDX and was surprised RC was not passed through the DAC -- had to re-wire as above.
Nick
NDX remote out 1 > 202 Pre
NDX remote out 2 > NDAC
now Naim app can control both 202 Preamp and NDAC input selection > I have 1 , 3, and 4 connected.
I wonder if it's possible to control the NAT 05 (non XS version) Tuner's preset channel selection also ?
Also, what would be the usage function for the NDX remote in ?
thanks a lot in advance.

No - see my previous post in this thread . System Auto only switches NDX input (Pre-Tuner) to NAT05, it cannot control anything on the NAT itself.
I am surprised that System Automation and the Naim App support CD Player functions, but not NAT Tuner functions -- not even pre-set up/down. I do not have a NAT to verify, either way.
