DAC V1 sample rate shows 44.1/24 from iPad

Posted by: DanT87 on 12 March 2017

any idea why this is? Not playing from any higher resolution source at the moment when I noticed it. Just downloads from iTunes onto an iPad and shows the above sample rate. Was confused about the 24bit part more than anything.

I might be missing the trick on something?

Thanks for any help

I would ask Naim customer support.

You might like to Google "Audiophile Play with an iPad" to get an article on the innerfidelity dot com site. Older iPads just operated at 48 k bits and everything got converted.

Thanks for the replies

filipe - I did read the articles but I didn't seem to find an explanation as to why it comes as a sample rate of 24bit?

any ideas?

The nDAC certainly has the capability to play anything and I assume 44.1/24 is well within the capability of the DAC V1. Apple make it difficult to get anything other than ALAC into an iPad. Given the DAC doesn't try to negotiate, whatever you are using on the iPad to send the digital file to the DAC must decide.

You must help by saying what format the music is, how you got it into your iPad and what App you are using to send it to the DAC. The appearance of 24 bit does not necessarily mean it is true 24 bit. It could be 16 bit with the bottom 8 padded.

Of course the DAC could be telling porkies. The Uniti 2 gives you this info, but the nDAC just does the business including playing anything from an Apple Device. Spotify premium on the iPhone sounds really good on my system even if the iPhone Spotify App does not get the full resolution which used to be reserved for the cooperative interface between Naim streamers and Spotify Apps (the Streamer gets the data from Spotify site but is managed by the Spotify App).

Hope you get an answer. I don't see any particular problem. The inner... site describes the iPad end a bit but is nearly 6 years old.

Filipe -

the music is just stored on an iPad downloaded through iTunes purchases. Unless iTunes downloads are 24 bit then...well I don't know.

its played back through the music app on the iPad.

Also when I plug my iPhone in, play Tidal HiFi from iPhone through to the V1 it shows up as 24bit as well.

Confused to say the least. Your theory of padding may be correct.

As far as I am aware, the V1 saying sample rate of 24/44.1 is the data coming into it right?

The reference manual for your DAC can be downloaded from https://www.naimaudio.com/site..._english_issue1m.pdf.

It describes how to set up the DAC and test it using Bitperfect reference files. The manual mostly talks about 44.1/24 bit. There is a lot more to fiddle with than the nDAC!

I don't think you should worry if you have set it up the way you want.

In my not very learned opinion, the 24 bits could be due to the Apple music player, not the V1.  When playing CD rips in iTunes on a Mac, the player defaults to 24-bit upscaling unless you use the MIDI app to change it to 16 bits.  I have no idea what happens on an iPad, or whether you can change the bit rate.  There is a consensus in some quarters that native 16-bit sounds better.
