Download - Missing track in Unitiserve
Posted by: Mike A on 12 March 2017
I downloaded a free album for Qobuz this afternoon. The artwork and 5 FLAC tracks needed downloading individually rather than as a folder. I assembled them in a top level folder call 'Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela', placed in that folder another one call 'Beethoven Symphony No9 into which i've save the artwork and tracks 1-5. Dropped the lot into my Unitiserve/Downloads folder (I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8).
The result, viewed on the NAIM app UPNP source was an album with tracks 1-4 + artwork, plus a separate rogue track showing as an extra album. I deleted 5th track and added a new copy of the downloaded 5th track that was in my Mac Downloads folder. However, its not showing up in the Naim app UPNP source or on n-Serve. Opening the Unitiserve downloads folder, I can see everything is there and the music files all show as .flac.
Suggestions gratefully received!!
Thanks, Mike
I think it's because one of the tracks has metadata showing a different artist. Set them all the same and the album will show as a whole.
Thanks HH - can you expand on how I edit the metadata? Sorry if this is a numpty question. I guess I need to do that from the iMac (can't see the missing track in Naim app on my iPad). Regards M
You need to use the metadata editor that you have (or it sounds like haven't) on your computer. I suggest dbpoweramp. It's best to get the metadata on downloads correct before copying them to the unitiserve.
Thnx - I'll have a look on line.
M
Mike - you can also try Metadatics. Works well for me.
I can also recommend Metadatics.
Thanks for the recommendations. I hadn't anticipated purchasing downloads would require much rolling up of shirt sleeves!

Often, it does. Those who sell downloads online get them from their various sources and often don't check them for consistent metadata. That seems to be up to us as customers.
The good news is that it's not a lot of effort. Purchase the download, save it to your computer, check out and optimize the metadata with a program on your computer, and then move it to your server.

Bart, you seem to be pretty confident in this, but I find transferring hires downloads to my NS01 to be a totally hit or miss affair, even after hours spent editing metadata. I recently downloaded an album which came as a zip file, which I unpacked, saved on my PC, checked the metadata, copied to the NS01 and it just doesn't show up at all on the server. I can see it in Windows Explorer, but it is just not visible in n-serve. I seem to experience these kind of issues every time, although it's not helped by the infrequency which I try it. Luckily in this most recent case I had the vinyl too, but it is disappointing.
It's just as Bart describes it here as well. Copy to the Qnap and it shows in the Naim app in well under a minute. I've done hundreds of downloads and it's never missed a beat.
Very grateful for all this advice. Noting that the files are now sitting on my Unitiserve, is it ok to edit their metadata there, or should I delete them and fix the problem with a fresh set edited on my iMac first? Does the Unitiserve have a 'Trash' I need to empty?
Mike - you need to 'take' the files out of the UnitiServe, edit them on your laptop and load them up again.

Have you had any success? Which metadata editor did you go for in the end? I would really like to be able to have a process for this which would work each and every time.
It appears to me that in the downloads folder it is not necessary to copy the artwork to a consistently named file as is the case in the ripped music folder.
Thx Adam - I guess 'take' is copy & paste or drag.
Clive - I've not had time to do anything yet. I'll report back as and when I can.

Essentially you need to re-tag the files on your laptop (outside of the UnitiServe) and re-load them into the UnitiServe.
This may mean using a backup copy, re-tagging it and deleting the one of the UnitiServe and uploading it from your computer.
If your files only reside on the UnitiServe you need to copy them over to your computer, re-tag and re-load them.
Thanks Adam. I assume if I keep the file names exactly the same they will be overwritten and not add extra copies.

That, I don't know...
What I would do, once the files are on a computer, is to delete the files on the UnitiServe and re-load them.
But perhaps the over-write would work. I simply have not tried the overwrite before.
Perhaps other members can advise?
Adam
I usually overwrite and it works.
My tip would be to always work within the folder the music came in. Don't create a new folder as, on a Mac at least, hidden files are created which the US doesn't like.
I also (using Metadatics) delete the given Comments and Genre entries, retyping the latter and ignoring the former, since the US can't see them anyway.
That's helpful - thanks. You've also highlighted a key lesson. I 'bought' this free album by downloading it from the web page rather than via their app. As a result, it arrived as a series of stand alone files and I created the folder. I guess that using their app would avoid this?

Maybe, maybe not. It does not matter. You do need to get comfortable with the process, which to reiterate is to (1) download to your computer, (2) edit metadata (and album art) whist the files are on your computer, (3) copy the files over to the server.
If the files are downloaded such that a folder for them is created on your computer at the time of download, you also need to edit the folder name to make it what you want. Or, just create a new folder and name it as appropriate.
If files still aren't showing up, you need to make sure that the folder name and file names and metadata don't contain non-English characters, symbols, etc. Certain characters other than A-Z, a-z, and 0-9, can cause issues with files on a Naim server.

If you download using the Qobuz downloader, the default is that it ends up in a folder within a folder called 'Qobuz' within my music on your computer. You then copy it across to your downloads folder after editing the metadata. My folder structure is simply a list of artists, which is about the simplest there is.

HH,
So far, I've been listening to a combination of my ripped CD's, stored on my Qnap NAS, and streaming via Tidal.
I use an HDX as a ripper / UpnP server to my NDS, (I know it might be simpler to install a UPnP server directly onto the NAS, and acquire ripping software for my laptop, but, at the mo' I prefer the simplicity of my present setup ).
It seems remiss of me that I haven't yet tried HiRes downloads, so just a quick couple of questions.
I understand the principle of downloading first of all to my MacBook Pro, then checking and altering metadata if required, so, can I do this editing using the nServe app?
In "Finder", on the Mac, the Qnap folder shows both "Downloaded Music" and "NaimRips", so it would seem intuitive to slide any downloaded files into the downloads folder, but can I be sure that the HDX will pick them up, just as it does with the ripped albums?
Thanks in advance,
Dave.
You can't edit downloads with nServe so you'd need to get something like dbpoweramp. As to the folder, so long as the HDX is set to look for all the relevant drives it should find them. If not, you could always put a upnp server on the nas, though there should be no need.
Thanks HH.
I downloaded the same album, the metadata is 'OK' & it reads perfectly from Synology & iOS app. I say OK advisedly in that its in the usual Qobuz mess & to say nothing about the stress of getting their download system to work - & I'm no numpty. Two reasons I prefer HRA & even the highway robbers HDT
