Download - Missing track in Unitiserve

Posted by: Mike A on 12 March 2017

I downloaded a free album for Qobuz this afternoon. The artwork and 5 FLAC tracks needed downloading individually rather than as a folder. I assembled them in a top level folder call 'Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela', placed in that folder another one call 'Beethoven Symphony No9 into which i've save the artwork and tracks 1-5. Dropped the lot into my Unitiserve/Downloads folder (I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8).

The result, viewed on the NAIM app UPNP source was an album with tracks 1-4 + artwork, plus a separate rogue track showing as an extra album. I deleted 5th track and added a new copy of the downloaded 5th track that was in my Mac Downloads folder. However, its not showing up in the Naim app UPNP source or on n-Serve. Opening the Unitiserve downloads folder, I can see everything is there and the music files all show as .flac.

Suggestions gratefully received!!

Thanks, Mike

Dave for the Macbook, use dbPoweramp or Metadatics to edit metadata.  I think that Metadatics is free on the App Store for OS X.

It's just as Bart describes it here as well. Copy to the Qnap and it shows in the Naim app in well under a minute. I've done hundreds of downloads and it's never missed a beat.

HH,

So far, I've been listening to a combination of my ripped CD's, stored on my Qnap NAS, and streaming via Tidal.

I use an HDX as a ripper / UpnP server to my NDS, (I know it might be simpler to install a UPnP server directly onto the NAS, and acquire   ripping software for my laptop, but, at the mo' I prefer the simplicity of my present setup ).

It seems remiss of me that I haven't yet tried HiRes downloads, so just a quick couple of questions.

I understand the principle of downloading first of all to my MacBook Pro, then checking and altering metadata if required, so, can I do this editing using the nServe app?

In "Finder", on the Mac, the Qnap folder shows both "Downloaded Music" and "NaimRips", so it would seem intuitive to slide any downloaded files into the downloads folder, but can I be sure that the HDX will pick them up, just as it does with the ripped albums?

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

Dave - if your 'Downloads' folder is enabled as a SHARE via your HDX, then YES > files you put in there will be read by your HDX.

From a user point of view, you will be then presented with just a library of, say artists, irrespective whether the albums are rips or downloads.

Metadatics is free and does the job on a Mac.

I don't have the download folder on my Unitiserve as it's ye olde 1tb job, so I use my Readynas Duo as a share for downloaded stuff. If I screw up the metadata and don't spot it until it's on the share, I have to delete the file, delete the file from the recycle folder and reboot the NAS. Otherwise, the Unitiserve refuses to acknowledge that the file has gone.

Just visited the App store and downloaded Metadatics .......... it now costs £9.99 ...... Grrr.

Never mind, I'll have a play with it over the next day or so, then venture into the world of HiRes downloads.

Thanks chaps.

Metadatics is a paid-for-app - around USD12 or so / Eur 10. But it is helpful, especially when you start downloading a lot of music.

Apologies for the delay in picking up the conversation - too much work to do!  I have now installed Metadactics on my Mac. Working on the file copies on my Mac, I've examined all five tracks as downloaded from Qobuz. One of the five tracks had a different entry for Track Artist. I've now edited the metadata to be the same for each track (except file name and track titles of course). Dragged across to the Unitiserve and ... all five are there in the Unitiserve downloads folder as seen from my Mac desktop, BUT only tracks 1-4 appear in the Naim app to play them.

What have I missed?

Can you send me a screenshot of the Metadatics for this particular album? It seems to be sorting by something else too...

I've had a similar issue with Qubuz downloads edited with Metadatics - for a few weeks only the first one or two tracks on each album were visible in N-Serve or the Naim app, even though they were visible on a Mac. Then, one day, the tracks all appeared. I've no idea why, but I'm guessing that yours, too, will appear sooner or later. Rescanning the downloads folder didn't help for me, but maybe give it a try anyway.

Clearing the upnp cache on the app might do it.

I'd say a rescan of the Downloads folder from Desktop Client or n-Serve for OSX should re-index all the files ... if you wish to get them to me via DropBox or WeTransfer (or something like that) then I'm happy to have a look at them for you?

Best

Cleared the upnp cache from the Naim app on my iPad, but no joy.

Not sure how to rescan the downloads folder. In NServe on my MacOS, selecting Preferences; Album and image cache; refresh didn't fix it.

Thanks Phil - not sure about how to get so much data to you.

regards

You can use a free transfer site called WeTransfer

Mike - if you'd like I can also have a look at the files for you tonight and hopefully send you a set back which will be picked-up by your UnitiServe.

Not sure we transfer is an option for me - OS X 10.10 is required :-(

Not really - it's accessed via Safari. It's a webiste WeTransfer.com - you just upload files this way.

Just for the completeness of this thread.

I had a look at the files Mike was having problems with - no wonder they refused to 'show up' properly. I've rarely seen metadata so messed up. 30 minutes on Metadatics re-coding the files, with a help of on-line lookup sorted it out nicely.

Another thing - there were 5 track in total. Tracks 4 and 5 were named, among other thing with digits 1 and 2 (as in Pt 1 and Pt 2). This threw my NAS and UnitiServe off completely. Changing to 'alpha descriptor' as in 'Part One' and 'Part Two' resolved the problem.

Good job Adam.  As noted earlier in this thread, the problem almost always is the metadata, not the App and not the Server.  Now Naim servers are pickier than others; I can use metadata with Asset that the UnitiServe did not like.  But in the end it's often the metadata.

Even if the basic metadata looks right, when one purchases downloads one should always do what Adam just did -- open it in Metadatics or dbPoweramp and look at ALL the metadata.  Crazy characters or info in obscure fields definitely can throw it all off!

I had this issue years ago and Phil kindly took a look and found a single non-visible character in the name of a track.  Once removed, it indexed fine. Sometimes you have to just wipe out all the old data and start fresh to avoid missing something like this.

*HINT* If your Naim server indexes some but not all of the tracks of an album, the error often is in the FIRST track it has failed to index.  So if an album has 11 tracks and only 1-6 show up, look particularly at track 7.  Because once a Naim server hits bad metadata, it cannot get passed it (in my experience).  But if there is a problem in the folder name, none of the tracks will index.

Just returned home to find Adam's email and have now the full album successfully installed on the Unitiserve. A HUGE thanks to Adam for this and everyone else for all suggestions.

I'm now a bit wary of Qobuz downloads, but do see many jazz albums on their site at attractive prices :-).  In slower time I'd be very grateful for a dummy's guide on what to look for in flakey metadata!
