CD

Hello,
First post so please move if its in the wrong place.
I have a fairly old but very nice naim system of old style 62 with HiCap + NAP100 - The 62 & 100 may be about 30 years old maybe more the HiCap maybe 20 or so. Speakers are Linn Kan of a similar age.
Im going to add the Naim CD5si soon. The system produces a very nice sound and perfectly good enough.
My question is: Is there anything to be gained by changing anything? Whilst the sound is great, I see NAP200's second hand for around £1000 mark so wonder if that would bring out a little more detail? or if replacing the 62 is a better option?
Dont want to replace it all as somewhat attached
Thanks in advance
Noel
Hi,
For the amp do you mean the new Nap 100 Black Series or a CB / Olive Nap 140 ? If the latter i think you have a classic and well balanced system, a fantastic upgrade would be a pair of Nap 135 mono amps.
Instead of a CD5si, you can consider a used CD5X pretty much in the same price bracket with the former.
Regards
Roberto
Or a CB 250 which would be better with the 62/HC than a 200 IMO. Also worth checking out servicing for your 62/HC if that's not already been done. It does make a big difference on components that are overdue a bit of TLC.

I predict a CD5i would be horrible on a Kan based setup
Back then a CDS or Linn Karik/Numerik was the cd to be used along with TT
Nowadays I'd say a minimum is CD5,X or XS not i. Alternatively an Rega Apollo player.
Homedem is essential
Definately get your hicap and 110/140 serviced, a 200 is not the obvious solution for Kan's, get a serviced old 250 or pass it.
Agree with BLund - The obvious and very cost effective upgrade (that would work a treat with your Kans) would be a NAP250 from the Chrome or Olive era. Should come it at well below £1k and if it has not been service within the last 10 years or so Naim would do that for around £400.
You can pick up a CDS2/XPS for £1,500 or so, which is what I'd go for. Service the Hicap if not done already, get a serviced CB 250 and you are away.
I guess the power amp is a NAP110 rather than a 100. If I'm right then as other have said, a power amp upgrade would be beneficial (or at the very least get it serviced).
The obvious choices are the matching (Olive?) NAP140, NAP180 or NAP250; in each case make sure it's been serviced recently or include the cost of servicing in the price.
It's also highly recommend to get the HiCap serviced, and likewise get the 62 done when funds allow.
I would also add my recommendation for a CD5X or CD5XS over a CD5i (even though I don't think a 5i would be a disaster, the rest of the system will clearly show the benefit of the X or XS over the 5i).
I find it pretty funny that the people that are thumbing down the CD5Si have never owned one, or would never own one, based more on the price than the sonic performance.
What I also find funny is someone recommending the Rega Apollo R over a CD5Si. I owned both, and there is a reason the Naim is TWICE as much as the Rega player. There is no comparison between those two players, the Naim is at an entirely different level.
Personally, I think you should audition the player and see if you like what it does in your system, I think it would be a nice addition to your system, but what do I know, I'm just an owner of the player, so I have no knowledge about the sound quality, I guess I need to have a system that you need to spend a certain minimum on to have any credibility.
I have never owned one, but SWMBO has, and I've listened to it extensively; and, good as the 5si is, in the context of the OP's system, particularly after upgrading the power-amp, I still feel that the X or XS will show it's benefits. However that's just my opinion.
I too agree that the Naim CD5si blows the Apollo r out of the water - it makes one want to listen for hours on end and even more so with a Hi-Line.
Thanks for the replies so far, yes the amp is a 110 (not 100) sorry for that
The CD5si is affordable so thats probably what Ill go for & the power amp will try and get a comparison between an olive 250 & the 200 I really dont mind what they look like. Also will consider getting the 62 serviced eventually.
The room we listen in has stone floor & solid walls almost a metre thick so just about everything sounds great, little chance of home demos though.
Thanks again, Noel
