Standmounts for NDS/282/300

Posted by: Chrissw19 on 18 March 2017

I'm sure someone on the forum has gone through the same quest before. I'm looking for serious bookshelf that will do justice to an NDS/282/300. There is quite a large choice available but where it gets difficult, is finding the few that will do the following well in a 14ft by 16ft room.  -->

1. work very well at low volume (sub 60db)

2. can be placed very close to the backwall (up to 40cm/45cm at a push from the front of the speaker to the wall)

3. have dedicated stands with adjustable spikes to vary the rake (a few degrees of forward/backward adjustment)

4. can be securely attached to the stand top plate

Thanks in advance!

ATC SCM19. No sales pitch this time.

Yikes, the last bit (4) stopped me in my tracks a bit.  Maybe you would be better with a small floorstander, like the PMC Twenty5.23, which take up no more floorspace or height than a pair of standmounters and stands ?

Kudos S10

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by Chrissw19

Thanks, the kudos are very popular on the forum. Is the rear port a problem very close to the wall? The stands do not seem to have any way to attach to the speakers, is it correct:

From what I've been told the S10 needs a good 18" behind it.

My suggestion would be to pick up a pair of Naim floorstanders, which can't fall off stands and take up less space than a stand mounter. If you got SBLs or SL2s you could consider them as standmounts with wooden stands.

Otherwise, the Wilson Benesch Vertex looks ideal, or the previous Arc. They have integral stands and bottom ports and I've read that they can work 6" or so from the wall. They may be worth trying.

Wilson Duette, budget permitting.

Thanks, I'm afraid the duette are too expensive, would cause a major issue in the household. The Wilson benesch are interesting . Do they sell direct or vis dealers?

Thanks Chag, which proac model can be placed against the wall and attach securely to the stands?

+1 although I should declare that I am going to look at the (significantly more expensive) Dynaudio Contour 20

Thanks for the ATC, they look interesting but I cannot find any link on their website regarding securely attached stands.

Why do you need the speaker attached to the stand - small children ?

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by Chrissw19

Dogs with very waggy tail, careless cleaner and also to be able to adjust the vertical angle without the speakers falling off.

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by hungryhalibut

While we are asking questions, why not a floorstander? It seems like the obvious solution.

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by Chrissw19

Well, always had some stand mount ... also, can you actually adjust the vertical angle of the floor stander without it topping over? It's always possible to add a bit of weight on the stand base but not sure how you would do it with a floorstander.

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by hungryhalibut

You're only talking of a few degrees, surely? Why are you so concerned about being able to tilt the speakers? By specifying stand mounts that both screw onto the stands and go near the wall, you are probably ruling 99% out. Thinking laterally, you could try some PMCs.... And my speakers are already slopey.

It's why I sent my query to the forum, could only find a very few (focal sopra 1, linn akudorik passive, duette) and not easy to find about backwall tolerance, low volume ....     Using the spikes to adjust the vertical angle can produce a surprising amount of sq improvement depending on your listening position. However, even 2 degrees can be a challenge for 4 little blob of blue tack.

and narrow that down to the ProAc Tablette 10 .

Looks like an ideal solution on paper...of course a demo would be wise. A lot of good things being said about these new speakers and I look forward to hearing a pair myself in the very near future.

Not necessarily. If the quite recent Tablette 10 is a closed cabinet designed as an infinite baffle to be positioned against the wall, other front ported vent stand mounts such as the excellent D2 can appear to be great contenders.    :D

I have PMC 20-22s in a relatively small room (probably the same size as yours), off 252/SC/250DR.  I chose these for good low volume performance and close to the wall.  They are front ported, so they give me bass without getting boomy.   Mine are not screwed to the stand, but they are set well enough not to be knocked off by dogs or over-enthusiastic dusting.   They have dedicated raked stands that also carry the cabling and have adjustable spikes.  I'm pleased with them - they have a natural forward sound, clear, and well controlled deep bass.  I expect the more recent 25-22s are still better.

One thing though - you need to audition - I know everyone says this.  But several times I've been all set to buy a pair of speakers based on recommendations only to change my mind when I actually heard them.

+1  Love mine, and indeed they only need little space and easy to position.

Thanks about the pmc, very valuable information about backwall and low volume ability.

The only appeal of standmounts, to me is portability as I like my speakers to be easily moved or carried by one person. This would rule out huge and heavy floorstanders. Vertical tilt angle is of little importance to me. Personally I suspect the angle of tilt with flloorstanders would still be easily managed by adding some footers beneath the spikes which is essentially the same thing one would do to the speaker stands of standmounts? Am I missing something here?

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by Bob the Builder

My floors are old and quite unlevel I just add another Spike shoe thing underneath the spikes at the back and I have pretty heavy floor standers.

Intelligent Sound IS6 mk2

Sweedish speakers which the producer recommends 10 cm from the back wall and 120 cm apart, pointing straight forward. Used them for a while with my SN1 with great results.  They are super easy to position.

I used them with some B&W stands which I filled with dry sand. Then I bluetacked the speaker the the top plate. Have have two large dogs with wagging tales and it didn't concern me one moment.
