Standmounts for NDS/282/300

Posted by: Chrissw19 on 18 March 2017

I'm sure someone on the forum has gone through the same quest before. I'm looking for serious bookshelf that will do justice to an NDS/282/300. There is quite a large choice available but where it gets difficult, is finding the few that will do the following well in a 14ft by 16ft room.  -->

1. work very well at low volume (sub 60db)

2. can be placed very close to the backwall (up to 40cm/45cm at a push from the front of the speaker to the wall)

3. have dedicated stands with adjustable spikes to vary the rake (a few degrees of forward/backward adjustment)

4. can be securely attached to the stand top plate

Thanks in advance!

+ 1 for the ATC SCM19, although my understanding is that they need a foot or so behind them to sound their best. I can personally vouch for the ATC SCM7, the baby of the range, which I own, and which are happy with 2” or less behind them. You may think they’re “not enough speaker,” but they punch far above their weight. With your 282/300 up them, you will be amazed at the rhythm, dynamics, and sheer energy they put out. Jon Honeyball, who posts here regularly, regards the SCM11 as the sweet spot of the range so, if the ATC house sound is to your liking, you might want to audition all three.

Regarding securing the speaker to the stands, I currently use Blu-Tack, which is more than tenacious enough for my needs (I have two kids, and one speaker is close to an open doorway). But if that’s not sufficient, you could upgrade to Black Tack, which is pretty much bullet proof, sufficiently so to need great care when it comes time to detach the speaker.

Another true classic to consider is the Tannoy Mini Autograph. Fast and free flowing, and timbres in the same class as of the ProAcs Response and Tablette series.  :taré1:

Definitely one of the Wilson Benesch stand mounts. They have a tripod arrangement with a big front spike which would make rake adjustments a doddle. And have a downward firing port. And are mechanically attached to the stand. And will lap up as much quality as you can feed them. A no brainer.

The centre line at the rear of my ATC SCM19 speakers is just 5.5"/14cm from the wall and I'm very happy with the sound.

When I removed them from the stands to replace the Blu-Tack with Herbie's Fat Dots (a worthwhile improvement), I had to pull and twist the speakers a fair bit to get them off. YMMV of course but that was my experience.

A decent blob of blutack is a fairly strong hold ime. Bed the speaker in, give it a few days, then use the floor spikes to adjust the tilt.  No?

Well, I'm using blue tack now but if there is something available attached to the stands then I would feel better, especially with the higher budget choices.

I'm with HH and Tobyjug; Wilson Benesch Arcs meet all your criteria and work wonderfully with Naim. I had a pair from 82/250 to 552/300 and they were always capable of revealing each upgrade along the way. They were also great for late-night listening at low volume.  Just saw that there's a pair at a well-known dealer in the Leicester area for under £1k - bargain!

Proac D2s or the Studio 118s. I use 118s on (Kiln dried sand filled) Pixel Plus stands.

Interestingly, no one has mentioned the B&W 805 D3?
