Is the forum in need of an overhaul?

Once there was a forum about a great Hifi company and all things music related.
Where has it all gone?
It flowed away in a tidal stream; at least you were able to spot(ify) it happening. 'Tis the end of the world as we know it.

Tony,
It's all still right here. Sounds to me like you're yearning for days of the past.
As far as an "overhaul", did you have any constructive suggestions in mind?

Sounds like you just need to stay out of the Padded Cell :-)
I wish there were more frequent posts and more contributors in the 'What are you listening to' thread. Music is what it's all about after all.
I remember a time when it was full of Mana, as if from heaven. Loads of childish spats about inconsequential stuff. And quite a sniffy attitude from some.
Glad that's all finished...
Ultimately the forum is what the members make of it - it's up to us to start interesting threads and to contribute.
Only as good as its members indeed.
We've lost a good few characters and there is a sycophantic tendency that is new or different or just annoys me more now.
And of course Naim have changed too.
Most disappointing (to me) is the lack of much life in the music room other than "your top 5 albums with more than 7 syllables in them". I learned a lot about Jazz and classical there over the years.
It still manages to draw me back though but not as regularly as previously.

i feel the same but i don't know why it is so. Any suggestions?

Agreed, but I wish people would actually tell us about what they are are listening to. I get really annoyed with posts with just a picture of the album cover, what's the point ??? The thread is titled "What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested?" The "WHY" is upper case, there is a clue in there somewhere, maybe a short why you like it summary, maybe something more detailed if its a really good listen, or maybe post nothing if its not worth a listen.
It all started to go downhill when Naim changed its logo… the allurement of the green glow has gone.
I've reduced the number of albums I post as I'm finding it quite tricky on the iPad since the Photobucket app seemed to conk out and I have to use the website. It's also hard to describe the album in a way that's useful and might encourage others so occasionally I will just post a picture, but I do try....
I have agree that posting about ten pictures in two minutes with no description is totally pointless.
I suspect that the perceived problem comes from being on the forum a long time and seeing it slowly evolve. It's probably not better or worse, just different. It's been incredibly helpful to me in getting going with streaming and I don't think I'd have managed without the efforts of certain members. It's about give and take and mutual support in my view, and perhaps there is too much taking and not enough giving sometimes.
How many folk singers does it take to change a light bulb? Nine. One to change the bulb and eight to sing about how good the old one was.
I really like the format now after Hoopla took over.
As for the What are you listening too now- who might be interested ? Thread.I don't post on that as I don't think anyone would be interested.I would rather send a YouTube link to friend's who I know rather than flap about on photobucket for 5 mins. Not knocking the thread at all.Maybe i just don't think anyone is interested.
Wish a certain ex Forum member with an old bike would return. He really got me into new classical music with his enthusiasm and promoting his system which was refreshingly humble.

I always thought the multiple posting of album covers was a veiled attempt to increase activity and their ranking. But maybe that's just me being cynical

Cynical yes and no idea of how the forum rating system works. I post a batch because I don't always have time to post them individually and also because I don't listen to whole albums most of the time just groups of tracks.
To answer another question and we seem to be going over the same old ground I cannot write about any pre- release album I post as I am basically not allowed to.
Maybe I should just stop doing so.
In any case personally for me if I see an album cover that looks interesting I will use my friend "Google" and investigate it.
I will also look at fellow members who have roughly the same taste as me and if there is something I haven't heard I willmake a point to give it a listen.
For instance Dave Marshall put me on to an album the other evening that I never bothered listening when it first came out and I went and bought a copy because it was so good. That's the power of the forum music Room.
I for one don't see the need to post the reasons why you are listening to something apart from possibly Classical as in almost all of the cases it is because you either like it now or have done in the past.
Personally, I find the "What are you listening to etc." topic among the most useful on the forum.
With access to Tidal for many of us, it has become so straightforward to have a first listen to something new, rather than make a "to do" note for later.
I've been introduced to so much music that would otherwise have passed me by, and it's quite satisfying when a forum member posts to say that they've enjoyed one of my recommendations.
It's all about the music.

Whilst I generally agree, Clive, I feel that people just saying what they are listening to is a bit, well, limited. Maybe people should read the actual thread title...... "What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested". I really want to know what people think of these recordings. That way, it might perk my interest to explore a lot more

Yikes ! You beat me to it , Mike........

Yep, it just goes to show that humour is still alive and well on the Naim Forum

I think the "WHY" is a difficult element to define. Why do you fancy a bit of Bach one day and Blondie the next? It is something intangeable depending on how you are feeling at that particular moment, what else is going on in your life, even what time of day it is. Most people do not have time to write an essay on the matter every time they post an album, they just know they are really enjoying listening to it and need to tell someone else in the hope they might like it too.
Btw what I find pointless is posters who just show an album cover with no band name or title on it!

Absolutely agree, Simon. It is soooooo annoying But I think that re, the 'WHY', I feel posters should give a little background about the music, what the music 'is' exactly (which often is new to others) , whether this is the album beginners (of this artist/band/composer etc. ) should begin with, how good is the sound quality (this is an audiophile site after all) .... etc. etc. A 'very mini' review, to be honest. Maybe i'm asking too much
We don't know much about each other. 'What are you listening to....' allows us to share how we feel and how that is supported by a particular album/artist at that moment in time.
All good imho.

The number posting in 'what are you listening to...' is actually relatively few. If someone is listening to DSOTM for the umpteenth time, what do they say? 'I'm listening to this because I love it' or 'this is a very popular record from the early seventies'....
Following Graeme's point about not knowing much about each other is interesting. The Padded Cell has revealed comments from people who seem rather loathesome; people who don't appear to give a damn about others, people who like to show off their material possessions at every opportunity. It's rather alarming that some people who love music appear to be rather nasty individuals.

One of them told me that they were moderated to death so what was the point. I do understand and maybe that is the problem - too much protectionism and Focal in return.

A few years back I got moderated for what seemed at the time was petty things and I know that two other members who got the same level of moderation took exception to it and left which was a great shame.
I still get moderated every now and again.

I guess that ultimately Hifi is boring. It's just a means to an end. The interesting threads are those about music, holidays, wine, or whatever, not yet another question about bloody wires.
I have to say that when I was nearly killed last summer I posted about it here - heaven knows why - I got fantastic support, emails from people I'd never met, offers of lifts because I can't drive, which was so helpful to me at the time. But posting about that sort of stuff can be difficult and I can see why many wouldn't want to go there.
