Is the forum in need of an overhaul?

Once there was a forum about a great Hifi company and all things music related.
Where has it all gone?

Hmmm. Normally just contain myself to the occasional post under Streaming Audio, but with the latest email from Naim Records this post reminded me to wonder for how much longer purchasers of Naim gear will recognise the origins of their logo

Anyone liking The Smiths should, naturally, go up 10 places every time they mention them. I'm sure Richard could get the algorithm altered...
+1. Erm, I mean that I agree with your suggestion whole-heartedly.

And anyone who uses the word "loose" when they mean "lose" should be shunned.

Aw, you're no fun
...or I get better base with cable X, unless of course the speaker is actually sitting on a coil of said cable.

Ah, The Smith's's's who unfortunately featured on that alleged DJ Jeremy Vine's show the other day on Radio 2. Jeremy eulogised about the dirge he was going to play and it certainly did not fail as a dirge. As you might guess, I am not a fan of the Mournful Morrissey and feel that any mention of him or them is definitely a -1,000.

This sounds awfully familiar. Sure I've heard it before.
Bit of a hobby horse maybe.

Do you work for the FBI part time by any chance?
Being a site dedicated to one brand is always going to have limitations.
Peaks of activity, coinciding with releases of products and troughs correlating with existing systems having been 'optimised' through advice on here.
The OP's post is a product of a trough. Last peak being DR. Wait until the new Uniti range finally releases, this will trigger more streaming/corner posts, NAS etc.
Let's hope so.
I used to be quite active in the Hi Fi Corner when the Olive range was current, as I had a lot of experience of many of the products in that range, so I felt I could contribute something useful to a discussion about (say) whether to add an XPS to a CDX rather than a Supercap to an 82. However, I'm pretty much a spectator there now, as I have no experience with the current range, only popping up from time to time to counter the assertion that "speakers do indeed have the single biggest influence on the character of the sound we hear" when it's presented without the qualifier in my experience.
I like puppy dogs, walks on the beach, appropriately-placed apostrophes and my favorite color is olive ...
... but back to the OP "Is the forum in need of an overhaul?" ...
In my experience, I say "NO".
The Forum is fun, ranking is completely unnecessary.

Anyone who answers " get a home demo " or " trust your ears " or " it is all about music " or " try hugo" should get some point deducted as well

I can't understand why people are so bothered by 'ranking'... it's only there if you go looking for it... I guess being objective it's loosely representative of the extent of user participation and usage of the forum features over a period of time... and it does seem to jump around a bit...
I did try and play a game once to try and maintain No6 which I inadvertently discovered I had become ... I held it briefly and then over shot .. Mike has it now
I agree those over extolling the virtues of 'trust your ears', 'only you can decide', 'it's all about the music', ''it's music not hifi', '[xyz audio replay component ] makes music' should take a 6 month convalescence break from the forum.... I agree I have been guilty in the past but am on the meds now.

Don't tell Donald Trump or Kim Jong-Un!
They won't be happy at anyone else being "Number 1".

God no!
However, I own a pair of WATT 6 with Focal inverted titanium tweets.
I've been on this forum since 2002.
When I first joined, there was a definite hierarchy, with certain (even then) long-standing members throwing their weight around. There was a lot of tedious crap about ferric vs non-ferric supports. There were flame wars about things that most people would think inconsequential.
There were people like Berlin Fritz, Dave Slater (who seemed to buy 30 vinyl LPs a day), Mick Parry, Rockingdoc, Matthew Robinson, Mike Lees, Munch, Top Cat, Seagull, who were all hugely entertaining, even if one disagreed with them; plus self-styled "legends" like Vuk and Stallion who were, in retrospect, shouty bores who thought they ran the place. Then there were the people who'd flounce off in a grand huff every other week, never to return, but who were of course soon back, only to flounce off again a fortnight later.
There was an awful lot of willy-waving but it was fun and there were a lot of very helpful people about. For example, I learned some useful stuff - whether it be about bit torrents, photography, accessing Dead shows from Archive.org, phono boards, positioning one's Naim boxes, LP12s, cartridges, etc. Lots of useful stuff, and by no means all of it hi-fi related.
And much content was very funny, and some threads verged on the insane - anyone remember that one about allotropic vs homeopathic medicine from a few years back? That provided months of head-scratching entertainment.
Perhaps most importantly of all, I've also met some very nice people via this forum, and there are others I would certainly meet up if for a pint and a natter should the opportunity ever present itself.
Fifteen years on, things have changed. A lot of those people who seemed so knowlegeable have either moved on, off or fallen silent. There are a load of new people, lots of new things to talk about.
Things are different, for sure, but I don't think they're any better, or indeed worse. Just different.
There are lots of threads/topics/rooms I find dreary beyond belief - F1, streaming, most hi-fi chatter, especially stuff about cables (but I still love the 'show us your hi-fi' pic threads), cars, rugby - but there's nothing forcing me to go on those, there is plenty elsewhere to occupy one.
And for those who moan that it's boring these days - well, why not make more of a contribution? Forums like this are as only as good as the contributions made to it. the more you put in, the more you get out.
I do try to post when I think my experience is relevant to the thread in question and that experience might be of some use. This is an attempt to repay the benefit I have had from the Forum over the last couple of years. I will also try to lighten the mood on occasion with varying degrees of success.
My use of the Forum has changed significantly, swinging from a focus on the HiFi Room to a much heavier use of The Music Room - particularly the 'What are you listening to and why might anyone be interested' thread. This coincided with the advent of Tidal and the ability to 'sample' artists, genres and albums new to me. In short I have discovered so much wonderful music and my tired old collection has been transformed. I now listen to so much more music and derive more of the pleasure I used to. Someone mentioned a lack of time to discover new music and that certainly resonates with me. The Music Room, internet radio and Tidal make new discoveries so easy and immediate. It is simply wonderful. The final stage is of course a visit to the river and the possibility of picking up a bargain.
So in summary, this Forum has been, and still is, of great benefit to me. I also enjoy simply reading some of the treads and the odd thread is genuinely hilarious. I see no need to change anything. Oh and BTW, the moderators do a fine job in keeping the conversation civilised. A 'well done' to them from this Forumite!
Like Kevin-W I joined in 2002 (Sept) and remember all the characters mentioned. I have made quite a few good friends through the forum, and I guess there are a few more I would have a "sherbert" with.
Better then or now ? I have learnt stuff from here but have moved on to a certain extent. I came to the conclusion that the ultimate sound is probably way out of my means and forever fiddling is the route to madness. So I came to the conclusion that me and my system are fine as they are, maybe a few minor tweaks left but by and large that's it.
I'll try to help out where I can and hope we can all survive the madness thats seems to be encompassing most of the world.
