A new NAS to put my new WD Red drives in...

Posted by: nickpeacock on 20 March 2017

Ok, I am now equipped with 2 new WD red drives.

Time, I think, for a NAS upgrade (from my current Synology DS212+).

I am thinking QNAP so I can run Asset.

The TS-253A looks ok, right?

4GB or 8GB version?

(Amazon says it's a 2015 model. Should I wait for a newer model - there's no particular rush...?)

That's what I've got and it's excellent. Built like a tank. Not sure what memory it's got though. Once set up, you can back it up by pressing a button on the front. I got mine from Broadband Buyer, who were really helpful and efficient.

Thanks, HH.

I like the sound of the incremental back-up feature - at the moment I use MS Synctoy but it isn't a supported programme anymore.

The 453 series are excellent.  I have a TS-453Pro which is a 4 bay version.

You don't need the extra memory unless you intending to use the NAS for other things like VM's or the many applications that can be installed.

Thanks - it's just for music. I'll probably go for the 4GB version then.

(One day when I actually have some time I'll work out how to rip DVDs to a (different) NAS. In my dreams.)

Asset doesn't demand huge overheads. I'm on my third QNAP. Not because the other two failed, quite the opposite. Good brand. I originally ran Asset on a TS-410 with 256Mb RAM with no problems at all.
