Android Tablet Advice Please
Posted by: Bananahead on 28 March 2017
The display of my NDX has failed and I have two choices. Either I send it back to Salisbury for repair which will take ages and because of shipping will be expensive or I buy a tablet.
What should I be looking for in a tablet? How big does the screen need to be? How important is the processor? What do I need to know?
There are a few functions of the Naim streamers that need to be controlled by the remote via the front panel display, and I certainly wouldn't want to attempt a firmware update without it, so my gut feeling is that you should bite the bullet and get it fixed. On the other hand, browsing and playing music is really not something I'd want to do without the Naim app. I don't think it matters what device you put it on - if you're only buying it as a remote, I would just go for something cheap. Personally I'm happy to use my phone (iPhone 6) and don't feel the need for anything bigger, although an iPad Mini or bigger is nice for viewing artwork. Bigger screens can also expose low resolution artwork and make it look poor, though - a bit like playing MP3s through a revealing system.
I'd get it fixed, hopefully under guarantee if you were the original purchaser. As for a tablet, something like an iPad mini would be ideal. The iOS app is generally a bit better than the android version.
I agree that a lot of the settings are only really usable via the front panel display and also agree that a tablet and Naim app make playing and browsing so much better. However I note that you ask about an Android tablet and I absolutely recommend this option over an iDevice. I have had a iPad on long term loan for work but much prefer Android which works very well with Naim and the Android version of the app seems to have fewer bugs.
Regarding size, I have tried 10 inch - a little large and heavy and a 7 inch - just a bit too small so I use 8inch. I personally wouldn't use a phone as it would be far too small for browsing and for my eyesight without glasses but YMMV. In terms of choosing an Android tablet, I recently replaced mine and am using an 8 inch Lenovo Yoga tablet. I am delighted with this - it is ergonomically brilliant and has a battery life of up to 20 hours usage - really! It is available from John Lewis and other outlets. The other main advantage is that it takes SD cards so you can expand your storage rather than pay a fortune for a higher fixed and unexchangable amount. The main knock on the Lenovo in reviews is that it is a bit under powered for glitch free gaming. I've had it for a few months now and have never found it struggles but then I only use it for Naim control and as a music player and e-reader when I travel. If you use it like me then I believe any recent tablet will be fine in terms of power. My previous one came from Aldi for £60 and did the job!
Thank you everyone.
I will not buy an Apple device under any circumstances. If there was a Windows app then that is what I would use but it will have to be Android. Probably an 8" - thanks PEV.
I live in Zürich but I am a UK customer (service, relationship and pricing reasons). This means that I would have to ship it to the UK and then ship it back which takes a lot of time and money. It is just celebrating its third birthday. And I am not planning on spending much time in the UK this year so this would seem to be the only option for a while.
It still sounds wonderful.

In my experience, larger screens do not give larger text size, just larger gaps between the lines of text, and larger artwork. An obvious shortcoming given the age of many Naim users, I would have thought!

Same here, I use both a Samsung Tab S 10.5 screen and a Tab S 10.1 screen size even though the Tab A is slightly smaller the text in certain applications is slightly larger strange but true.
I think the Tab A is good value for money bought mine on offer at PC World for £179 a few months ago generally around £220
I don't like my Tab A as a remote. The screen isn't very nice. I picked up a gen 2 iPad from my company for $25 and I love the screen size and clarity.
I totally understand your dislike of Apple, but I like my iPad much better than My Samsung Tab A.
As others have mentioned, firmware updates could be a challenge without the screen on the NDX, but understand the issue.
I use the Pixel C as my Tablet, which I can absolutely recommend, however, it is 10 inch which is may be too big.
Good luck.
