Although I agree with the sentiment of your post, I think the title is misleading.

It's an upgrade from what he had while away...

hmmm. I can't listen to music on the road - (literally in my case - I mean in my car), unless it is playing through my Chord Mojo.

I travel about 50% of my time. When I arrive 11pm at home on a.g. Thursday, I like to listen the first part of Bruckner 4 or 7. Magic happens. Music gets painted so surreal in the living room.

You need an upgrade when you are on the road. That Apple stuff you mention is way too student like. No value for money either.

Had a long trip yesterday with the Mojo plugged into the aux input of my rather poor car stereo (Mazda CX-5). The little thing is truly magical indeed, it makes the junk car audio pretty listenable

Now this is something I can totally relate to. Also 50% travelling, 4 and 7 Bruckner are also favorites - only difference I prefer the 2nd movement in both :-). For the road I have my ADL X1 and lately a Dragonfly red but they are poor substitutes....

you should get a  amp-dac/DAP and nice pair of headphones as well.....

I've actually got a road rig... Chord Mojo... Audeze EL-8's... a hard drive with high quality digital music and my MacBook pro running Amarra. I'm just not really a headphone guy, so I find that I rarely go to the bother to set it all up and listen. At some point will probably sell the DAC and headphones and put the cash towards something that will get some use.

DAP is far more practical thsn mojo

fiio x3 is a good one to start , double sd slot, running tidal, good price and look

i download some new albums and some playlists from Tidal and enjoy it pn the road with sony zx2
