CDS3 - TLC
Posted by: The Strat (Fender) on 02 April 2017
As a 2004 model still on original laser I can't complain but recently it has become distinctly noisy and started to skip towards the end of discs. So yesterday it made the trip to Leicester for the onward trip to Salisbury. On returning I'm looking forward to another 13 years. Streaming - pah!!
That feels rather circuitous Lindsay - but I am sure that it will be worthwhile
Come on Lindsay, get with the flow, get streaming man. Next you'll be telling me you have got one of those old fashioned record players!
Lindsay,
You'll be doing 'that crazy hand jive, too' when you get her back.

Streaming is soooo yesterday Lindsay... Vinyl is all the rage now.
Look on the bright side Lindsay, you can spend more time listening to the Xerxes.
True it is a circuitous route but yesterday's leg was combined with a visit to another forum member and his wife who live in the area. Took along some big black and little discs. Awesome listening session and excellent meal out.
When you get it back you should try a 555PS on it. This was a major elevation to my CDS2. In the wake of the DR upgrade, there are lots of base 555PS around. Or you could step up to a 555PSDR and know you are ready for streaming when the NDS comes available second hand.
Your CDS3 is going to have company as my 2004 CDX2 has developed a random stutter, so it's making the trip to Penzance for the onward trip to Salisbury. Plenty of Vinyl to play till it returns.

Maybe - but it sounds mighty fine with the XPS which I could have DR'd. But i definitely will not be replacing it with a NDS as I just love the sound and the simplicity of playing CDs. I might buy a cheap DAC for for streaming if I think it necessary.

Lindsay,
I had my CDS3 fettled a couple of years ago via those chaps near Leicester. I then proceeded to rip all my CDs to NAS with a plan to go streaming. However, I enjoy the CDS so much I never bothered to change to NDS. Over that time period I was lucky enough to change the amps from 252/300 to 552/500. The CDS3 is a good enough source for these amps so why change? One day perhaps.

My CDS3 started rejecting CDs as unplayable. When it got to 10-15% of the CDs I put in, I sent it off for a new drive. Problem solved.
Collected her from Cymbiosis this morning. VAM 1203 installed and various caps replaced. First impression is greater resolution and insight but most more organic.
Hopefully good for another 13 years.

Lindsay
Glad your enjoying the rejuvenated CDS3, my dealer phoned yesterday to say my CDX2 is back so going to pick up tomorrow. We both sent them in at same time and both back 3 weeks later, can't complain at that.
Great news Lindsay, I well remember how that felt.

My main reason for acquiring the CDS3 was to better enjoy my classical CDs. Listening to Mozart Violin Concerto No 5 by the sublimely talented Vilde Frang It is certainly fulfilling the remit.
Wait til Mon evening when it and the psu have both warmed through :-)

Great news Lindsay, delighted for you. My CDS3 went back to Naim for a similar reason a couple of years ago and came back with a new transport, various other components and a firmware update. Your term "more organic" captures the essence of the very real improvement that I experienced too, so much so that any desire to change evaporated. Enjoy!
Best regards, FT
Just had the optical pick up unit replaced on mine, which I assume is just a part rather than the whole transport. Someone with technical knowledge will hopefully help out on this. Sounds mighty fine now. It was painful to hear it skipping and I feared the worst. Very pleased to have it working again.

Nic
Foot T asked in the 552 thread how it was settling in. In a word it is just sublime although for brief period on Wednesday it sounded somewhat aggressive but it then returned to that gorgeous organic feel. Probably improving progressively but the music is just sweet The only digital source I will ever need!
