POE network switch

Been running streaming to nac 272/250dr/xps/dr over a devolo dlan homeplug solution . wanted to see if direct cabling from my router which is upstairs improves SQ , and i must say there was a noticable improvement.(Had to run a 30m cable)  Due to the distance and number of rooms requiring network cabling and wifi through an AP, ( a couple of network streamers for TV and the synology, )the installer is recommeding the use of  an 8 port switch with .p.o.e

Am I wrong in thinking that the introducttion of the poe defeats the purpose as it is also likely to introduce interference if connected to the 272

Best to go with a non poe option and power the wirless AP upstairs explicitly from the wall?

Any experiences?

Cheers

Power over Ethernet causes no added interference. It's a formal standardised method of powering network equipment and certain network hosts via the Ethernet lead. The power provided is DC. Power over Ethernet can be advantageous with respect to noise as it can reduce the need for many small noisy wall wart powersupplies, and replace them with a quality centralised powersupply.

You might be getting confused with so called Ethernet over Mains or Powerline adapters, which is something entirely different. This is a mostly consumer technology and modulates network data over the mains using many radio frequency modulation carriers. This can produce extensive interference and effectively converts your mains wiring into a non resonant wide band radio transmitting antenna.

I confirm that Ethernet via mains cabling creates a lot of nose, as per Simons second para, it also interferes with some ham radio frequencies a fair bit.

Indeed. Theses things are not to be sniffed at.

Thanks a lot for the clarification. So getting rid of the devolo power line adapters will help sq ( i noticed that when i hooked the 272 directly to the router) and in the new ethernet layout adding a poe switch for distribution will not affect it. I guess one can always switch off poe through config.

Thx

The switch in my media/hifi cabinet is powered by a POE core/central switch. I've never done a comparison, but I hope one less poor quality wall wart is generally beneficial.

Notes:

- The Naim components are on a separate electricity circuit.
- The Cisco SLM2008 Switch in my media cabinet is powered by the Meraki Core switch over POE.
- I am using Roon to store and manage my local and Tidal libraries.

Hm. I count 4 Meraki's, smells like EPP ;-)

I'm using a MS220-8P, a POE device, which powers a MR33. POE doesn't seem to have an effect on sound quality.

Thanks greg thats v useful.

Ok . Finally got rid of the homeplugs and installed ethernet cat6e cabling around the house . Must say there is an improvement in sq. Luckily no blocked conduits. Chilling to jazz radio blues and a jura.
