Naim "5 din to 4 rca" - the options for having an output

Posted by: AndyDandy on 03 April 2017

Hi there,

I've been on the search for a good 5 pin din to 4 rca interconnect cable, so that I can connect my headphone amplifier to my NAC92 preamp. The options are limited, and hard to find.

For the most part you could buy a 5 din to 4 rca cable for £5 on eBay, but I think it would heavily limit the sound quality of my system if I went for those.

Alternatively, many people recommend the Chord Chrysalis cable, which is quite a challenge to find because they are discontinued. I have only found one of these cables for sale at a reasonable price, from a Malaysian website. The Chord Chrysalis din to 2 rca cables are quite common on the other hand, but don't work for outputting to headphone amps.

There are thirdly the Flashback Sales 5 din to 4 rca cables, offering premiere and standard variants. Does anybody know if these are made well enough to not hinder the sound quality? If they're on par with Chord Chrysalis, then I think I will go for this option.

Finally I found this.             I haven't heard any opinions on this interconnect yet. From the website description, is it possible to judge how good this interconnect would be in comparison to the other cables mentioned above? I'm terrible at assessing what makes a good and bad cable.

Any opinions and help would be greatly appreciated!

I couldn't say how Flashback cables compare to Chord, but they are certainly well made, and if you call them and tell them what you want to use it for, they'll make sure you get the right cable. I dare say you could say the same about Chord, and maybe Naim too, but for a NAC92, I would go for one of the Flashback options.

I've tried a few of the DIN5-4 x RCA Phono interconnects that are available to buy online at a reasonable cost. I preferred Chrysalis to all of them, which is why I recommend it.

Chord is currently making me a Signature DIN>RCA to connect my new Simaudio Moon 430 headphone amp to the 552.  They also make the reasonably priced Shawline cable in this configuration - the  in between Epic is not available with DIN termination.

Can Naim make one up. The lavendar is reputed to be the same cable as chrysalis.

There is such a cable in the Naim line.

Lavendar is available in many flavors and length (1m or 2m).

I recently bought a flashback performance cable to connect a dac to naim pre amp, it’s very good.

If you look at the website, performance and standard are recommended for use with Naim equipment, nowhere is the premium cable recommended for use with Naim.

So does the output cable NOT have be a 5 din to 4 rca then? It can be a 5 din to 2 rca?

Yes sure, but it has to be wired for output at the din.

Chord made me a 3-metre Clearway DIN to 4RCA to connect my Nakamichi cassette deck.  My dealer arranged it.  Recommended.

You need a 5 pin din to 2 phono lead. As Manu says above, just make sure it's wired correctly to output FROM a Naim amplifier. You absolutely do not need a 4 phono lead. You won't go wrong with either Chord or Flashback - so long as you get the correct version.
