Naim muso...still a good system to buy for home vs 2.0 system./also using microrendu & Roon labs

Posted by: canali on 04 April 2017

hey guys...for my desktop **and den i'm using the Focal Alpha 50 nearfield powered monitors.

might upgrade to the 65s..which i can trial for 30 days.

I've been offered a 'mint' muso from a retailer ( a client of his) for US$780 shipped.

I know it's a great price...but the tech is from 2014...still relevant in your op?

i'm not a critical listene, but do love quality sounding music.

I guess i could also use the naim as a TV 'sound bar' as well, so it's more useful that way, too.

my rig is pretty simple:

using laptop as NAS (tidal hifi, ripped cds, some 24/192 files)

attached is sonore microrendu/ultracaps power supply,, ...will retry Roon with the new 1.3v update....i'd prefer my Muso, if I bought it, to be hardwired for better sound (presumably).

**can the muso attach to a microrendu and Roon can recognize it as an endpoint?**

thanks

No. The muso does not support USB input from the mR.

You could use AirPlay but that won't give optimal sound quality.

I'd be looking at Bluesound speakers which are Roon compatible as an alternative.

I'd imagine muso will gain Roon compatibility with an upgrade but whether that will extend to "legacy" devices or just to the muso x is debatable.

thanks, i appreciate this...might just stick with my focals...i do wonder if the muso will be updated  soon or what?

Posted on: 04 April 2017 by canali

sorry, muso X..is that an upgraded device or firmware upgrade?

thanks

It's merely a suggestion that in the future there will doubtless be a new muso. But certainly nothing is imminent.

Surely unmistakable.

why won't it take the Microrendu imput, however?

The muso USB port is like all Naim USB ports except on the DAC-V1, that is they accept USB sictks and iPod etc but NOT asynchronous USB which is what the mR outputs.

many thanks for  your courtesy...is appreciated...i so would like to try this gig...i can get one for US750...but i also have a microrendu ...so that sort of defeats the purpose.

currently 9again for desktop personal listening/laptop)

i'm using my focal alpha nearfield monitors and the DAC of my choice....which all would work with the microrendu

...let me know if you don't buy the Muso . Love mine, and would take a 2nd unit anytime.

Posted on: 06 April 2017 by canali

ok will do....i guess i could always use it as a high quality tv soundbar, too.....or at least use in my smallish living room until i decide on a system...or replace the Focal Alpha 50s as my desktop rig...decisions. just having a hard time, also, understanding why Naim made this unit so it can't take asyncrhonous data like the microrendu or won't be doing so (their email to me at bottom)....i'm not a tech guy, so even understanding the microrendu (or auralic aries etc) had me scratching my head initially. heck just a few yrs ago all we needed for good USB audio was a good set of cans and a good DAC...how we've now progressed beyond that..

from naim when i enquired if they'll upgrade the firmware or other to accept products like the microrendu:

''We will not be adding Asynchronous USB to the Mu-so or Mu-so Qb as it does not have any USB slave functionality – the USB port is USB Host only.''

If you have a large collection on an external USB drive it's relatively easy to put that collection on a network drive (NAS) and access it from a Muso  via UpnP (Universal Plug and Play). There's a ton of info on the forum on how to do this. Most NAS drives have a built in UPnP server software pre loaded and ready to go, so for a few bucks on eBay you could make it work.

thanks everyone...question on a compatible linear power supply...any good suggestions that won't break the bank?

my freind suggest the naim one will be noisier than a smps...

SMPS are noisy so you should get a powerline conditioner
Most audiophile products use a linear power supply (LPS) so I am surprised Naim still uses a SMS.
you need a powerline coditioner to reduce line noise because SMPS are really noisy
=Do a google search on noisy SMPS.  This is why manufacturers all switched over to more costly linear power supplies

Do you mean compatible with a Muso? If so, the answer is that you can't: it has a built-in PSU which isn't upgradeable. Besides, a SMPS is not necessarily bad. They have a poor reputation because many cheap, badly designed ones can cause problems, but that isn't always the case. Naim's £60,000 Statement preamp has one, as do many expensive Linn boxes.

yes please...compatible with the muso...

per your reply (thanks, btw) so the power supply in the muso isnt' bad and it doesn't matter as i can't upgrade anyway...so the dirty noise issue doesn't apply so much to it.

I would only buy the Bentley edition at this point.

Yes, it's a moot point really as there is no way to connect an external PSU. At least, not without making an unauthorised modification which would void the warranty with no guarantee of an improvement (and further discussion of that here would break forum rules and cause this thread to be removed.) Maybe best to be happy with what you've got....or sell it and get a Unitiqute!

thanks...i'll just sit back and enjoy it...and await the next update or new version of 'muso2'

well i just did some experimenting....as noted for my desktop gig i have the Focal Alpha 50 nearfield speakers.

wanted a mit more bass extension so i bought the larger Focal 65s... but quickly sent them back.

imo they're big for me at desktop, despite being on stands...sounded a bit boomy in my small room, even.

so, back to the smaller but still punchy Focal Alpha 50s.. (CNET review below)

Leave it to the French to kick the sound of desktop/computer speakers up a notch

 https://www.cnet.com/news/leav...speakers-up-a-notch/

then i got in my naim muso......just hooked it up...sure it sounds good...but not $1400 good

(i got mine for us$900)...and most of all, as discussed here,  it doesn't accept either

my microrendu, uptone ultracaps power supply or roon labs...and the lack of 2.0 i was warned about.

the Naim was like ''SD''.n terms of music...switching back to my Focals/microrendu/ultracaps/roon trio sounded like ''HD''

if i can use such a term, just to give you an idea: more dynamic, textured, layered, punchy, cleaner, tighter, and wonderfully punchy.

guess when you add in my microrendu, ultracaps, and roon labs to the focal alpha 50s

it makes those French darlings even more worth keeping.
