Muso and QB - discovery and multi room
Posted by: Pip Norwich on 05 April 2017
hi
I have a new Muso and QB which I have had numerous issues setting up. Finally I have them working fine by setting static Ip addresses for each. However, I really want the QB in the kitchen but whenever I move the unit into the kitchen the Muso will not recognise it for multiroom . I have to take it back into the study attach an Ethernet cable and its back on the Muso multiroom . I can then unplug the Ethernet and it works fine on wifi until I unplug from the mains to move it again... I thought the wifi signal may not be good enough but the unit works on its own in the kitchen just not on multiroom . Please has anyone got any ideas ? I have done a network scan and bonjour is working on both units ?
Thanks
Do you have the Muso connected using ethernet or are they both using wifi?
I have a Superuniti connected by ethernet and a Mu-So QB using wifi.
If I use the Superuniti as the "master" source and then select the QB to be multiroom playing from the SuperUniti, it plays fine.
If I select the music on the QB and ask it to multiroom to the SU, it keeps cutting out.
I just always use the SU as the "master" and multiroom from that and it always works.
Even if both are wifi, try using the one closest to the wifi router as the "master source".
Hi
no the Muso is on wifi as is the QB - it works fine when they are both near the router as detailed above as long as I put an Ethernet onto the QB before I wifi it. I do always try to use the Muso as the master but obviously can't if the multi room function isn't there . The real problem is that I want it in the kitchen . Thanks for the advice I have ordered a 40ft Ethernet cable just to see if it works in the same way- if I can plug into Ethernet albeit briefly in the kitchen . If that doesn't work I will try putting the Muso on Ethernet as you suggest to see if it helps !
Thanks for your reply

It's fair to say that your wifi has to be absolutely "spot on" for them work properly. In my own set-ups where I use Mu-So QB's, they are close to wifi access points and receive a good strong signal.
Until I got it all properly sorted with runs of ethernet cables to new wifi access points, it could be a bit flaky, with signal strength not at full.
Most ISP supplied routers aren't terribly good either, which all adds to the potential problems in trying to get a good, reliable, stable network.
I'm quietly confident that an ethernet cable should sort your issue.
The other workaround might be to try ethernet over powerlines.
"Powerlines adaptors" are not ideal but, in some situations, they can get ethernet to tricky locations and eliminate wifi issues.
As long as they're on the same circuit, they usually work but can be detrimental to audio quality in higher end systems.
Thanks - my friend has suggested a POE injector and a wireless access point and he is making them available to try -but it does sort of make me wish I had gone for a traditional amp speaker input set up !
Please try to avoid using internet-over-mains at all costs - it's detrimental to the sound quality. You'd better be setting a WiFi bridge and connecting your Muso from that via a LAN cable.
From the OPs original post I suspect somethig is amis with regards to the network set up. Setting up static IPs is not really an ideal choice either.
Could you please descibe the basic network set up you have? Switch? How many devices are connected to the network?
Will do tomorrow but this is the scan - so I can't even add a photo to this post ... how does that work ? As with everything it's counter intuitive
This is the basic network set up - tried and tested with streaming solutions (picture courtesy of Mike-B).
In your case NDX is replaced with Muso or QB.

Photo sharing is primarily used via Photobucket or similar.
This is the link to instructions:
Thanks again both - I am going to try the ethernet cable and my IT bloke from work is going to help with a more permanent solution - will let you know how I get on.
Good luck - I'd be interested to know how you get on. Plus, what wifi/router/modem you're using, as some are problematic...
I have a Netgear D6200 - will let you know how I get on - thanks for helping I was a little desperate last week and was thinking of returning them - I was in a tricky situation as they are both Bentley special editions and I bought them from a Bentley dealer so don't think they would be much help with a set up issue !
Just follow the basic network set up I summarised above and you'll be Ok.
The Netgear *should* be a decent router.
It's a funny thing though, as mine all set up effortlessly and it does seem that some people do have issues with their networks causing all sorts of issues!
I would have hoped that regardless where you bought them, there should be some sort of help available.
Failing all of that, a call to the technical department at Naim often rewards you :-)
DO NOT RETURN THEM! They're too good for that!
Hi
Installed a Unifi AP AC LR and problems appear to have been sorted. Really pleased and now enjoying the experience as I should have been. Thanks for your help both
