Can't get naim app to display artwork for folder
Posted by: latecomer on 05 April 2017
Hi all,
I have read that this is due to a setting on my upnp server, but I'm at wits end, I'm able to get the app to display artwork at the file level, but when i'm browsing the root folder one level up, I can't get it to display artwork on the folder itself. Any help would be much appreciated!
I'm using a Synology NAS, running DSM 5.0 - 4493 Update 4.
Thank you!
I assume you know that 'Folder View' is only a folder icon, you get the art when you open the folder. To see art when browsing you need to browse 'By Album'.
What is your Synology model (type/number) You need to update the DSM software as its way way behind, DSM 5 has long been replaced & its now at DSM 6.1. Why not set the NAS to auto-update & its all done for you.
Thanks a lot Mike, I didn't know that really, so it's not possible to display artwork under "Folder View" huh, I guess I will have to change the way I browse my library if I want the artwork.
Mine is a rather old DS212J, I remember when I updated from the initial DSM 3 or 4 (I can't remember) it seemed like my NAS became slower or more laggy. I attribute this to older hardware combined with newer software, much like how my first gen iPad mini cannot take the later iOS upgrades. Thus my reluctance to update the software unless absolutely necessary. In your view is DSM 6.1 worth the upgrade?
Sorry about that but Folder View is what is says, folder. I prefer to view that way as its faster than the time it takes to load the art cover as you get with the other 'View By(s)' Plus it looks like the same as the file tree in Syn's File Folder & my PC Explorer.
An alternative to get 'better' art is install the Synology included 3rd party UPnP 'Minimserver', it needs the included Java package installed as well & MinimWatch on your PC/Mac, & yes its a little bit fiddly to set up compared with te touch & go Synology UPnP, but its easy enough for anyone with basic IT skills.
I understand your concerns with the abilities of DS212j, its is a Single Core CPU & RAM is 256 MB (DDR2). I understand also that Synology updates will not be shown if your OS is not able to handle it. However its not the cause of your question so if you are reluctant to update. Maybe time to splash out
Even with Minimserver running I don't think artwork would be included on the 'folder level' view . After all - what artwork would that be? The first, the last, the middle album?
Once a proper UPnP server is running browsing by Artist, Genre etc becomes available - much easier to use.
Hi Adam, I'm not saying art is available in 'Folder', a folder is what is says, a folder, & in all the UPnP software I've seen the art is only viewed when the album is finally opened in that view. My thoughts with this in my previous post is that the Synology 'Media Server' software is a bit clunky with displaying art in all the view by options. I suggested Minimserver as thats an option included in the Synology package & (IME) it does a better job with its art viewing options than does 'Media Server'. But I still use 'Media Server' as art is not that important to me & when I do use it its not that bad.
Hi Mike - I was actually referring to the original post - what artwork should be displayed on a 'folder view'.? That was a bit of a hypothetical question to the OP
Zadnych problemow Adam

In my extremely limited knowledge on this subject I thought that the folder would display the folder.jpg image while I was browsing in the root folder, for example:
X:\MUSIC\Simply Red - Stars\
I would assume the Simply Red - Stars folder would display the album.jpg located within this folder as the artwork while i'm browsing in the upper MUSIC folder.
But based on Mike's response I guess that doesn't work. Or maybe someone else can get it to work, perhaps I was misunderstood, no offence [@mention:1566878603907884]!
If I may have another go at this: Based on what I get with Synology 'Media Server' (UPnP software)
'Folder View' gives a simple view of the folder tree in the NAS, it's not complicated by or dependant on metadata & as such is the most reliable browsing view giving a view only of the folder tree in the NAS.
Browsing by other views brings other factors such as metadata into play; e.g. browse by 'Album Artist' gives a folder tree view at Album level, then when the Artist's folder is opened the artists list of albums is shown with the album cover art if the art is embedded & in the NAS index.
In Synology 'Media Server' seeing the art is dependant on the art .jpg being correctly attached or embedded, if its not correct the view of the album will not show. I'm not 100% sure if that is the same with other media server software.

Pretty much the same in case of UnitiServe and Minimserver.
UnitiServe will not actually 'permit' a folder view at all - it always presents the music based on the metadata.
Minimserver will add a folder view in addition to the regualr meta-data based views.
'folder.jpg' is a default name for artwork in the UnitiServe ecosystem. The server is set to recognise only that file name and display it for a given album.
The synology media server indeed does not display artwork for folders in folder view. But minimserver does. This is (not the only reason) why I am using minimserver.
I have structured my folders like:
genre/artist/year - album/trackno - title
In the album folder I have placed cover.jpg images. These are displayed as icon for the album folder in folder view. I did not try to place a folder.jpg image into the artist or genre folder. But in my understanding, too, it should be displayed by minimserver as folder icon.
