Servicing for CD5x with "Err" problem
Posted by: Maughan on 06 April 2017
Hello all.
I bought my CD5x new in around 2005. It has worked flawlessly until last night, when it stopped playback mid-disc (it was all fine up to that point) and then refused to recognise or play anything at all. Each time I tried, it whirred and clicked a bit (although barely audible) and then forlornly flashed "Err" at me. (Yes, I have tried multiple different discs and tried turning the player off and on. No luck.)
I guess after 12+ years of reasonable use it is not surprising that it probably needs some TLC, so I am not complaining.
I have spoken to my friendly local Naim dealer and they have advised me that it needs to go back to Salisbury, but that there is now a fixed price repair. For my item, the quoted repair price did not seem too bad. (I was expecting higher, although SWMBO thought it sounded steep. It is probably somewhere in the middle. In any event, I just want it fixed!)
But my dealer also said that as well as fixing the actual fault (which I assume is probably transport-related), Naim will also service and/or replace all other parts that need it, as part of the fixed price. I am hoping that this effectively means that, as well as a straight repair of the actual fault, I am also going to get a serviced and possibly improved CD player back. Does that sound right - or am I being overly optimistic?! What other parts in a CD5x might need to be "refreshed" after 12 years, and how would that improve the performance?
I just want it working again, so anything along the lines I am hoping for would be a bonus. I am just curious (from a tech perspective) what is in a Naim CD player that can be serviced and/or improved in this context.
Thank you!
Matt
PS: I just recently bought a 200DR to replace my 150x, as a result of a lot of help on this forum. It arrived a few days ago and I was going to do the swap this weekend. I guess I will now have to wait a few weeks to experience the improvements...
