Streaming from sd-card to Unitiqute 2?

Posted by: Stormange on 10 April 2017

Hi all,

I have been trying to stream from SD-card via a QNAP Qgenie (aka QG-103N) mobile NAS. It does not seem to work. It supports the UpNp Discovery and Bonjour protocols. I guess it should support UpNp AV to work with the UQ2 and Naim app. Does anybody know if there is a way to make this work? Other nice and clean (no RPi thanks) ways to make streaming from SD-card to Naim streamer work is greatly appreciated.

Most QNAP NAS can run a UPnP server, usually Asset. I'm not sure that yours can, in which case it may not be possible to serve files to a streamer from it. Maybe QNAP support can tell you if it's possible to put such a server on it?

It is a small and inexpensive NAS quite unlike QNAPs proper ones frequently mentioned in this forum. So I guess it is not possible to run Asset or the likes on it. But I will Contact the support to check. Is there nobody who have a good solution for streaming from SD-card to Naim streamer?

Do you have a computer with an SD card slot? If so, you could put a UPnP server on the computer and serve files to the streamer from there. In fact, a server on your computer might be able to see the SD card music files in the QNAP.

I would like to not have to run the computer while listening to music. Perhaps I should have a look at Raspberry Pi after all. Thing is I am not very good with computers. Is it possible without too much trouble to use Rpi for streaming from SD card to uq2.

Why not just copy the music files on the card to the NAS (or am i missing something ?)

The QNAP Qgenie is a simple mobile NAS that does not seem to be able to stream to the uq2. There is no compatible mediaserver.

Ah i see - i thought you were already using this device as a NAS and just wanted to stream the content from the card.

I'd buy a suitable sized USB Stick , like a Kingston Datatraveler and copy the music files there. Plus the USB they know drive into the Qute and you can use them with the Naim App.

When I do this with my Qute V1 I do not get cover art on the music.

Although your computer would need to be turned on to run a server,  it's not as if you would have to use it to play music, or even have it in the same room, as long as it's on your network. You would still be controlling your streamer from the Naim app as usual.

Why make things so difficult? Why not just use USB thumb drives which are completely supported by the Qute natively? You're iceskating uphill...
