8TB Drive Recommendation for Core
Posted by: DUPREE on 16 April 2017
My dealer has convinced me the Core is ready for prime time and I have heard it directly connected to a DAC and it is stunning. So I am working on getting everything ready to go. Anyone have an 8tb drive recommendation? What have people had good luck with?
Any idea what the MSRP for the Core is in the USA? Looks like I can sell my NDX and just use a Core.
It's about 2500 bucks. I have listened to it multiple times at ProMusica in Chicago. Connected to a DAC the overwhelming consensus has been it blows a NDX or 272 playing UPnP out of the water - I really couldn't decide whether the NDS was any better, maybe some can. Of course this is a different and more direct playback than ethernet and that could be a big part of it. However the improvement is clear with any decent DAC - he demoed it with a Naim DAC and a Chord Dac and both were clearly clearly superior to the UPnP NDX or 272. I am going to get one when funds permit which is looking like soon and go direct CoAx into my 272. Playing direct from the core is amazing sounding; if you don't believe it just listen.

core with dac in direct mode is better than ndx and 272, no problem. But the best is nds with the core in ethernet mode, it is this source demonstrated in the statement shows. But for now the core presents a lot of bugs and errors in the software vs the unitserve. It is better to wait that naim will fix that ( see last core topics). Perhaps the core you have is all right now...i hope so.
Naim recommends seagate 2,5 hdd. i heard toshiba are also fine and wd. Samsung evo ssd is also recommended, but 8 tb would be the price of the core itself...
So the core using non-local storage is better than UPNP into NDX? Or is the benefit from local storage?
I am honestly not sure. Ken offered me one to take home for home-dem. I would have to imagine there is some degradation but not sure. The listening I did was straight from HDD on the core. The core into the 272 coax was better than 252/NDX analog with the same power amp. I would just go listen. I will know more after my home dem and I presumably buy one of it is as good as the multiple listens I have had
I like that they've gone the BYO storage route.
Please keep us updated... This is the first new Naim thing [in my price range] that has gotten my interest since the Naim Hugo. Oh wait.... scratch that. Since the SN2.

The NDAC is a Naim recommended uprgade for the NDX, bypassing its internal DAC, and some use Chord DACs in the same way. So I think it's very likely that the differences you heard were essentially a demonstration of different DAC performances.

no, ndx / core in upnp is better than ndx/core in dc1.

i advice you to listen the topic of february or march" uniticore, what is on the box" ( something like that).

I don't think that is the case. The same was even more so true with the core into a NAC-N 272's CoAx. I don't think the DAC in the 272 and the NDX are that different although I think the 272 is a slightly newer chipset. Also the Chord dac used was purposely a Mojo not an expensive one.
id make super sure that core with the forthcoming software/firmware actually does the task you need it to do.

are you sure, because one week ago some users still had problems with the core...
They are working really hard on the Core. Lot of activity in the beta around it.

i would be interested today to know how it can compare to the unitserve. When i made at home the comparaison one month ago, with a january core, i could not detect real differences in sound quality vs my unitserve tp ps, but very very minor differences ( i had to be hardly concentrated/ i took aspirine after..). At that moment i had also a lot of bugs with the metadata and not liked cd rips. i compared mostly downloads.
But today, if all is fixed in the core, i am interested in this comparaison...
My core is installed with a 10tb barracuda drive

you said" i am sure that actually the core does the task you need it to do" but one week ago some core users on this forum were complaining about their core, specially with cd rips. So i ask you why you are sure, ... but perhaps naim have finally all fixed the last days?

So it supports 10tb drives? That is great. Can you post the Seagate P/N.. I was originally thinking of
https://www.newegg.com/Product...9003&ignorebbr=1
But I think I would go 10tb just to make sure all is good for the forseeable future.

Please read what I actually wrote. I did not write "I am sure". I said "I'd make super sure that". I.e. Be certain that it does what you need.
And i sm not going to comment on unreleased software. My views will wait until it ships.

ok, i understand perfectly now, thanks. 5/5 captain!
When you choose a hard drive, remember that in the Core it runs all the time, 24/7, unless you put the Core into deep sleep. That is I think why Naim recommend the Seagate Pipeline (aka Video) range.
As I understand it, most HD drives will work, but whether they will survive running all the time may be another matter.

do you know if the samsung evo ssd drive ( i need only 1tb) can also resist the time and be powered 24/7? do you recommend also to put my unitserve in sleep between the listenings?( finger on the logo button to switch it off). I have not a back up of my cd rips just a back up of my downloads.... but only 250 cds. I fear that the hdd of my 2016 unitserve will broke one day....

The SSD drives are designed to be on 24x7. Turning them on and off is worse than constant on state.

ok, thanks a lot. I am following the possibility of buying a core , but i am not sure yet. On sound quality, it is nearly the same i think, with my nds. But i fear the possibility of the breaking of the hdd of my serve, so ssd , which i can remove, is more securising.... and the serve is making also annoying noises.
