QNAP TS 219 PII no internet connection
Posted by: Dungassin on 22 April 2017
I'm sure I've seen something similar on the forums before, but can't seem to find it.
Yesterday I fired up QFinder Pro on my Mac, and it "couldn't find my NAS". Looking in BTHomeHub6 it doesn't seem to be one of the connected devices, but if I look in Finder on the Mac it's definitely there, and I can play music files from it on my NDS. I think the last time I tried to use Qfinder was before I "upgraded" from homehub5 (not sure 6 is any better!)
I've tried unplugging the NAS from my network, switching it off, rebooting the router, then reconnecting the NAS, but no joy.
Looked on the internet in general and seen lots of conflicting advice on how to fix it. I don't think I've ever set up a static address for that NAS.
Other than reinitialising the QNAP and then copying back approx 3TB of FLAC, what else should I try?
When I changed routers recently, I "lost" my QNAP and no matter what I tried, I couldn't "find" it.
However, Qfinder did find it and revealed that I had forgotten the fact that I had in fact, changed it to a static address.
So even if you have set a static address, Qfinder should still find it on the network. This was also using Qfinder on my Mac.
Perhaps try plugging both directly into the HomeHub or same switch if you have one?
Hi
If not already done so allocate the NAS a static IP, make sure it is within your exisitng network, ie if your current router resides at say, 192.168.1.1, ensure the first three octets are the same & fourth is not in use so you could allocate the NAS at 192.168.1.5 or 192.168.1.10 try & avoid a clash with your DHCP allocation range, but you could always adjust that later.
Im not sure what BT sets tbh - a google search finds 192.168.1.1 to ...250 which is daft 192.168.1.20 - 192.168.1.250 would be desirable as it allows for a few statics outside the DHCP scope for printers etc
The NAS may require a restart once the iP is set, once restarted, in your web browser type \\192.168.1.5 or what ever IP youve set it to & see if it connects. If that dosnt work try pinging it.
You probably have to allocate a share name for the folder your music, say music & lets assume the server name is QNAP
PC - in a dos box type ping 192.168.1.5 (or whatever the IP is) then press enter
Mac - just run Network Utility - Ping - if ping replies then it is on the network
To map a drive in DOS type net use E: \\qnap\music theres plenty online about net use
Mac in Finder, click Go then connect to server type smb://192.168.1.5/music (change the IPs if you set a different one)
Hope this helps

QfinderPro doesn't show the QNAP NAS.
BTHomeHu6b home page shows me what devices are attached to the router. I have devices attached to all of its ports, but one doesn't seem to have anything connected to it at all, so I assume that is the port to which the NAS is attached. Don't know its IP address so can't use GO etc.
It's definitely attached, because I can see it in Mac Finder, can read/write to it, and my NDS knows it's there.
Funnily enough Finder>Go still shows a WDMyCloud NAS which I passed on to my eldest daughter some time ago. Must remove it from the settings some time.
Put Fing on your iPad. That will find it.
Have you tried turning off the BT 'Smart Setup', I've found that causes more problems than enough, 'smart' it ain't. Once thats done I would advise a full system reboot, HH6 first, wait for it to finish, then power up the NAS. Also don't forget your HH6 is IPv6 enabled & that might not be helping especially if you did leave the NAS on a static IP (IPv4) address.
Reading the www on your problem I'm a bit apprehensive about my new HH6 arriving in a few weeks. But my son has one & he & the family is packed to the gunwales with smart phones, ipads, games boxes, sonos etc. & it just works.
I'll try as you suggest, Mr Fish. If it doesn't help, then ...
I've already tried as you suggest, Mike, without success. We're off on holiday very soon. Think I'll leave it until we get back and then re-initialise my QNAP NAS. I'm now reconciled to the LONG time it will take to copy all my music back onto it from my backup. (sigh)
Use a Windows laptop with qfinder and connect this up directly to your QNAP by passing switches router etc, okay you will have a 169... Address but if qfinder can find it you should be able to set an IP via Qfinder
In System settings, Network can you post what the QNAP IP & Default Gateway IP is set to?
I appreciate the OP may not have an iOS device but, assuming one is available, I've found the Net Analyser app referred to in this forum sticky to be very helpful in diagnosing similar problems.

There's an Android version, too.
Hi,
Not sure if you still have problem but would help if you posted network settings for QNAP IP & default gateway IP
I use Open DNS for my dns server so I have set:
Primary 208.67.222.222
Secondary 208.67.220.220
just back from holiday. I have downloaded Fing. IP address for the QNAP is 192.168.1.75. I've just connected to the QNAP using Safari and the IP address, and the NAS is performing an update as I write. Not sure what is meant by the network settings for QNAP IP and default gateway. Hopefully all will be well soon.
Hmm ...
Did the QNAP firmware update. Went to Finder>Go etc (MacOS) and mounted the drive just to be sure. Can get at the drive via a browser (Safari in use on my iMac), but if I try via QFinder Pro still reports as 'no internet connection'. I can do what I want to do via the web browser, but why isn't QFinder 'seeing' it? NDS etc can see it OK, and I can get into the multimedia folder with no problem using the Mac Finder.
May just put up with it rather than continuing to bash my head against a brick wall.
So long as you can get to tbe Qnap from your computer to load albums onto it.
I don't know which Qnap you have, and whether you backup to a USB drive using the button on the front, but if you do you'll find that a differential backup takes four hours instead of four minutes, as a result of the new firmware.
These things are sent to try us.

I've gone back to the previous version for the time being, having wasted two evenings trying to resolve a DNS issue which appeared with the new firmware upgrade. It was a bit of a pain rolling back as some of the applications needed reinstalling but it'ts working well again now.

Won't be a problem for me. I always copy my dBpoweramp rips to the QNAP NAS and a Thunderbolt 6TB external drive (which is partioned for Time Capsule and Data). I keep another back up on yet another external hard drive, but I have set Chronosync to do the backup to that from the Thunderbolt drive, which has always been much quicker than backing up from the QNAP. I'll confess to being a 'belt and braces' sort of bloke.
