UQ Potential Upgrade Options

Posted by: CaptainBlack on 23 April 2017

At the moment I have a UnityQute feeding a pair of Spendor Sp1s. This unlikely combination sounds great, but, it’s a few years old and I fancy upgrading the front end of the system. Having been really pleased with the UQ I have taken a look at the wider range of NAIM equipment and see a potential dilemma which hopefully you knowledgeable people can help me with.

I was thinking of a budget of about £4,000 to replace the UQ and for the moment I am ignoring secondhand though I do realise there are opportunities in that area. I don't need or want a CD player or FM/DAB radio because I stream everything off a Synology NAS and Internet Radio. I might subscrive to TIDAL if an evaluation proves to be good. I have an Apple iPad and it would be handy to have AirPLay but this is not mandatory.

Potential solutions I have considered based only on internet research at the moment are:

1) NAC 172 XS with NAP 155XS = £3,419 (70w)

2) NAC172 XS with NAP 200 = £4,180 (80w)

These combinations can (hopefully) be demonstrated by a dealer quite straightforwardly  to see whether the difference in cost is justified. However from what I have read on here there seems to be a strong feeling that the NAP200 is significantly better than the NAP 155XS but I find it hard to undertand why that might be the case (other than the difference in the power outputs).

Then there is the 'wildcard' option of a Unity Nova when they become available. As I understand it this would provide everything from option 2 plus AirPlay, a HDMI port to connect a TV and straightforward ‘over the air’ software updates for a similar price i.e. £4,099. Whilst £4,099 is no bargain (for a one-box solution) it begins to look like quite an attractive proposition.

Have I missed any options that you guys would also consider in similar circumstances? Any other comments would be most welcome.

 Many thanks in advance.

I'd also consider an exdem 272 for under £3,000 and a used 200 for around £1,000.

Personally I'd wait to hear the Nova. If it is half as good as marketing suggests, it would easily outperform either of your current options. It seems cool that it can take a SD card for local storage. I'm getting a 512GB SD card for 265 USD. (I have a relatively small music collection)

My vote goes towards N272 (ex-demo) and NAP 200.

I would ignore the Unit range if you want to really upgrade - UnitiQute is a very capable small all-in-one - only once you go into separates, the 'real' fun starts

One further advantage of getting N272 - it can be upgraded with an external power supply at a later stage.

At an even later stage you can swap your NAP 200 to NAP 250DR and you will have a killer of a system.

Absolutely wait to listen to the new Uniti series. They are very new designs and architectures compared to the Classic series components, and have a good range right upto their reference audiophile grade with the Nova. I heard a prototype Nova and I thought it fantastic.... really really impressive. The entry level Atom wasn't too shabby either.

So would I, it works really well.
