52 upgrade

Posted by: JohnL on 01 May 2017

Hi all, I'm feeling upgrade fever is approaching. Am currently using a 52 with 52 PS, both serviced and upgraded (Pots 8 etc) in 2012. I'm considering a Supercap DR to replace the 52 PS. Has anyone gone down this path and if so, what did you think?

thanks

Hi John,

I tried a Supercap DR on my 52 and found that music notes started and stopped more crisply and clearly than when using my olive Supercap. However, the timing went off a bit, so I found the music to be less engaging.  Better Hifi but less music. So the olive Supercap has stayed.

Others prefer the SCDR, so try before you buy.

best regards, FT

I always thought the 52PS was considered the best for the 52, though I've never tried it. If you have upgrade fever with that system there is probably an ideal solution.... a 552.

How about getting a supercap DR for the 242

then you can have a little experiment with it on the 52

Thanks for your reply's folks.

HH, yes that would be nice but I can think of at least 10,000 reasons why that wont be happening !!!. I have heard a few who say that a fully serviced 52 PS is the way to go so as FT suggests, I will be demoing first.

Lyndon, our "friend" in the south who has the same name as a fast car has sold a couple in the last 2 years, so who knows ?. As for the SC on the 242, what a splendid idea, hadn't considered that one

Thanks again, John

I've found if your the rest or your system is Dr'ed then yes do it or try it. To my ears DR work best with Dr amp's and other DR'ed PS. Not sure why system synergy maybe. Ive only every enjoyed listening to dr's kits when the whole bunch are DR'ed.

Dr has great bottom end when volume is low. But to my ears the classic and olive range win when the volumes given a bit more  encouragement.

Just how I see it I'm sure most won't.

what fast car is that ??

yes I have a very fast car but its not called a Lyndon ?

ive only recently gone to DR supercaps, one a couple of months ago, the other on Sunday, even though they are used they still need a couple of weeks to properly come to life, well that's what I found with the first one.

as you're currently using a hicap you will see a big difference straight away

Hi Lyndon, sorry misunderstanding, I didn't mean you, I was referring to a retailer who has been refered to on these pages by that name. Thanks for your advice

You get less power feeds with a SC vs 52 PS if memory serves.

Doesn't the interconnect have to modified, if you change from PS to SC??
