Impacts of volume limit on Superuniti

Posted by: TomGroove on 02 May 2017

Hello,

after having fun last nite with a new Upnp App, which suddenly did play my Superuniti with 100 through my living room, I am very glad, that my loudspeakers survived :-)

So I decided now to set the max volume at the Superuniti to 50. So are there any negative impacts ? Or how is the max volume setting technical realized ? I heard, that through lowering volume less bits are used, but never fully understood the theory. So is the max volumes setting just a volume cut at 50 than, or is there an additional filter introduced ?

Thx and happy listening !

I used to set my SU volume limit at 60 to avoid any nasty surprises! I certainly didn't notice any detrimental effect on the sound - I am sure Naim have not done any 'filtering' to achieve this.

The easiest thing is to set the limit and then try it. I believe the limit only sets the maximum volume that you can achieve via the app - you can still turn the knob itself to 100.

thx, I actually thought it is limited than for the amplifier, not only for the app. Let me check that. I have it currently at 45, but might get up a little.

imho the discussion at below link is interesting, there is also a link to a pdf within the text, which shows digital versus analogue volume control details.

In the case of the SU & 272, although the volume control is digitally controlled, it's actually analogue circuitry, so you don't lose ant bits of resolution.

Setting the max volume just limits the amount it can turn the volume up.

You are quite right. The app is set at 70 and the knob also goes to 70. Sorry if I've confused anyone.

No problem [@mention:4804681823084713] , always good to test things out.

Thx [@mention:36201736971392588] very good to know, I was actually not sure, whether there is analogue circuitry set to a limit. Solves my problem.
