552 scary investment
Posted by: Richieroo on 02 May 2017
Hi I have been enjoying my 272 with 555ps into my Nap500dr..... I now have a chance of getting a 2 year old 552dr .... it will be a real push for me to afford.... my plans are to eventually replace the 272 with an nds... But in the meanwhile use the 272 into the 552 until funds permit an nds.....
I have read all the threads on the 552 .... nobody seems to regret it.... I am still struggling internally with the concept of a pre amp at this value..... the 272 with the 555 is that good.... ulp.... I think I need some reassurance.....
Are you referring to hugo into 272.... surely you could connect hugo output to 272 analogue input.....and then out....not best use of either 272 or hugo....
Picked up 552 from Trevor as arranged....great guy....will install soon...once my back has recovered!
Your not so bad yourself Rich - just remember those transit bolts!!
Just made that 'scary investment'...
My much loved 52/Supercap has finally been succeeded by a 552. Now I'm not going to spert too much hyperbole but nothing had quite prepared me for the uplift in sound quality. I've heard a 552 in a friends system many times but it's only in your own that you truly appreciate what it is capable of doing.
All I can say is that I started playing music at around 7pm last night and got to bed at 4am this morning. The only word I can think of to discribe it is just simply mesmerising. It's only been powered up for a few days, so I can't wait until it's fully settled.
I thought going from 135's to a 500 was a jump but all previous upgrades pale into insignificance against this one.
In life I've tended to find that rewards are often the inverse square of the risk, so whilst it can be classed as a scary investment be well prepared for the up side!

This won't change in the weeks months and years to come. Apart from even more goodness emerging as it settles down in the short term. If you've bought a new one it could take the rest of the year. Just when you think it couldn't possibly get any better you'll experience another spine tingling ramp up. But as you say, it doesn't exactly sound like an underperformer out of the box!
Mine is approaching its fifth birthday and it sounds just as magical, special, transparent and enthralling as it ever did. It's a novelty that has not worn off. I almost feel guilty - but never for too long. Snatching a quick side commonly turns into an hour or two. Grabbing an hour this lunch time will probably take me through to tea time. Sometimes I have to be disciplined but I always have to tear myself away.

The bigger the risk the smaller the reward?????

I think I was chasing the same one but you beat me.
All I can say is buckle up and be prepared to be amazed.
I really didn't need to read any of this........
Thanks all ... my back is ok now.... just doing other stuff.... will report back asap. It will be interesting to see if there is an improvement even with 272 as source.... ultimately this will probably be swapped out for an nds....
