My speaker demo experience for Supernait 2
Posted by: Artferg20 on 05 May 2017
Hi All,
My system:
Rega RP8, Rega Aria, Cadenza Red
SN2
Chord 2Qute-Vortexbox- Roon
Kef LS50
Today I spent the afternoon at tomtom audio listening to suitable speakers for my SN2. I have a budget roughly of £1500 to spend on new speakers with the main requirement being whichever speakers would have to work against the wall.
I used to own the original Juniors which i regrettably ended up selling.
They didn't have an SN2, so this was replaced with a 202/200. Speakers on the listening list to suit my requirements were the new Gurus Q10 & Juniors, finally the Neat Iota Alpha. Started off with Q10s, immediately impressive very refined sound detailed and smooth underpinned with a lovely round bass, listened to various tracks on vinyl and moved on to the new Juniors.
Listening to the same tracks again on the Juniors, wow! The Juniors to me had more of an engagement factor about them, much more fun and seemed more detailed and open. The Q10s bass and overall sound was much more controlled and refined a little more grown up per se.
Didn't listen to the Neats because the layout of my lounge wouldn't have worked with them.
So that left the two Gurus! I ended ordering what I'd regrettably sold. The new juniors. The new crossover and drivers really have taken its sound to another level from what I remember of my old pair and a price increase to £1100. I had every intention to stretch my budget and go for the Q10s at £1800 as it's more appropriate to what I have. But ultimately preferred the sound of Juniors.
Only downside is waiting for their arrival in a few weeks.
Sounds like a successful demo all round. Congratulations on the new purchase - and interesting that you have chosen the Juniors again. What finish did you go for? I thought they look rather sharp in white!
So are Tom Tom now supplying and stocking the Guru range again? Delighted to hear if so. It would be superb to have Guru speakers available in the UK again. When I contacted Guru directly a while back they had no UK distributor at the time.
It's great to see speakers that work well against the wall - where speakers should be. The new ProAc Tablette 10 looks good too, for about £1,000.

Thanks Yetizone!
They will be only be available in Oak initially. Eventually (3/4 months) other finishes will be available. Tomtom hopefully should have them within the coming weeks.

I actually had them on my shortlist try and listen. Difficult to find a dealer near.
I am using guru juniors currently with nac52/nap300. I just moved house and now have a larger listening room and was planning to audition bigger speakers but since purchasing longer speaker cable and siting them properly near a wall they still sound great so I won't bother. I bought mine a few years ago from Tom Tom also.
Good news if the supply issues get resolved and they become available again in U.K.
I'm really pleased Gurus are available again, I used to love my Juniors and I really wish there had been somewhere else I could use them, they also looked damned good in white.

The Tablette 10 should be on your short list before you make a decision, wonderful speakers and as HH states new for a grand. I run a pair of Tablette 10 with my 272/100 two inches from the back wall nearly two weeks in now and things are really starting to open up.

I'm definately going to sneak in a quick demo of the Proac's. I've found three dealers that aren't too far away, so will check if they have a pair for demo.
Thx
The Proac Tablette 10s are getting a lot of excellent reviews at the moment they are surely looking good. For anyone who might be interested, the Signature version of the Tablette 10 will be introduced by Proac very soon.

The signature version will have to be something special to top the existing Tab 10
I have to admit - those new Tablette 10's have my attention too. After following the thread on Fishy Pink, they are definitely going on my audition list.
Proac are to be applauded for designing new boxes that sit against the rear wall and don't need acres of space behind them. I hope they are a roaring success and other manufacturers start to design speakers for similar placement (Russell K!).
I know its a tiny point and unrelated to performance, but I wish they had used magnets to hold the grilles in place. Not a great fan of male / female plastic lugs as I've had a few break off over time.
I've literally just contacted a dealer near my work place to ask if he has for demo the Proac tablette 10. He quite quickly dismissed them, suggesting that my amp is capable of a lot better and suggested the Proac DB1. I made that point on my call they need to work against the wall.
I'll move on and contact the other two.

Not my experience 272/100 into the tabs sound wonderful trust your own ears and audition. The tabs for me will be within my system for a very long time with future Xps upgrades.
The ONLY speakers for SN2 are the O 400's. They are pretty affordable in the secondary market.

So if 400s don't work in your room, you have to change your amp as well? ![]()
And if your room is small you'd better move house.

I think Kudos need to discontinue their Super 20C s then....

Yes. I don't like the rules; I only make them.

A sideways note: I have CDX2 and S-400s, and am demoing a SN2 at home. It's been on since last night, it's not brand new, so it should be warm enough.
I am not sure I like it more than than the SN1 I own; it - here, at last, in my room and to my ears - sounds more clear (or should I say less stout, less teutonic) than my SN1 but also more forward, less warm, more detailed but also as uniform as the classic SN but in a different, more sharp and cooler way.
And what's funnier is that I started a few years ago DR-ing my older XPS.2 and liking it a lot; since then I have slowly realized that what I systematically dislike, in some new Naim products, is the DR component in them. I didn't like the HCDR, and am not liking this DR-ed Supernait.
My problem, and nothing of interest for the OP, but S-400s are not the problem: they are great VFM. But since last night, when I connected the SN2, they have ceased communicating and are just performing. And boring me, with a petulant and hyper-perfect rendition of details.
Just an opinion.

From my experience with Naim amps, they usually need 3 days when powered up from cold to sound "right". It might be worthwhile to reassess the Supernait 2 tomorrow or the day after.
Ryder,
thanks for the suggestion; I think I'll have to give it back tomorrow, so I still have 24 hours.
I'll try not to have prejudices.
Max
I'm afraid your initial impression won't change, no matter how long you keep the SN2, because your description of the SN2 being more forward, more clear, more detailed and sharper than the SN1 will not change dramatically if at all, as that is precisely what the differences are between the two.
If you like the presentation of one, I don't think you automatically will like the presentation of the other, no wrong or right, just what one prefers.
Out of interest! Has anyone experienced N sats? I've seen a couple of preowned speakers floating around.
Are they suitable with my system?
Thx

Great little speakers - fast and fun. A very neat design and work close to a back wall. Really need their own stands to get the best out of them. Limited low bass so they really need the n-Sub subwoofer in most rooms.

+1 re n-Sats: have been running my pair on their dedicated stands for 3 weeks now with a recently acquired pre-loved SN2 - and can confirm the combination works very well close to back wall. Very punchy and musical - the SN2 is just brilliant with plenty of controlled power reserves, which the n-Sats seem to crave for
) - very rewarding indeed!
